The all-electric hatchback could be introduced to the market ahead of the Curvv EV scheduled to arrive in 2024

  • The development mule you see in these images does not seem to have an exhaust pipe.

  • Will utilise the Ziptron EV powertrain and specs likely to be similar to Nexon EV.

Tata Motors, which leads India’s passenger electric vehicle (EV) market, has been spotted road-testing the Altroz EV. The pure-electric variant of the popular hatchback is expected to be launched ahead of the Curvv SUV coupe slated to go into production in 2024.

We could tell this test mule is the battery-powered Altroz as it seems to lack a tailpipe. While the test mule looks similar to the ICE car, the electric version is likely to get a closed off grille, plentiful blue inserts (similar to Nexon EV and Tigor EV), and a different set of alloys.

The Altroz EV will use Tata’s Ziptron powertrain technology found in the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. Tata has been tight-lipped about the electric hatchback’s specifications, but we suspect it could utilise the same setup as the Nexon EV, meaning it could get a 129PS electric motor paired to a 30.2kWh battery pack. The Nexon EV has an ARAI-claimed range of 312km (on a single charge).

During the unveiling of the Curvv concept, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles And Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said two existing ICE models will be launched as electric vehicles before the Curvv. We expect one of them to be the Altroz EV.

The electric hatchback has already been displayed at Auto Expo 2020 and you can have a detailed rundown here. We expect it to be introduced later this year and be positioned between the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. It would not have any direct rivals at launch, but will prove to be an alternative to Tata’s existing EV models.
