Ola Electric has announced its investment on an Israel-based battery technology company, StoreDot. The company is known for its batteries with extreme fast charging (XFC) technology that is claimed to be capable of charging from 0-100 percent in just five minutes. That’s pretty much on par with stopping to fuel up your petrol-powered two wheeler.
As a part of the investment, Ola Electric will gain access to the XFC technology, and will also get “…exclusive rights to manufacture batteries integrating StoreDot’s fast charge technology in India.” This means, Ola Electric could design a battery pack that could power the next-gen Ola S1 range of e-scooters, and could also upgrade its Ola Hypercharger network, resulting in massively reduced downtimes for its EVs.
Supplementing this, Ola Electric also plans to establish a battery manufacturing plant of up to 50 GWh in India. This will help the company manufacture the battery cells in India, massively reducing its dependency on foreign countries. It will strengthen the company’s supply-chain management, not to mention ultimately bringing down the prices of its EVs. To help realise its dreams, Ola Electric has appointed former LG Chem Power CEO Prabhakar Patil to its board.
StoreDot plans mass production of its XFC batteries in the next couple of years. Its silicon-dominant anode construction is claimed to be significantly better than lithium-ion cells, allowing for such fast charging times.
If Ola Electric manages to incorporate these new tech quickly, it could become the largest EV maker in the country by a long shot. But more importantly, we hope Ola Electric is able to set up its charging infrastructure soon so that the range anxiety can be mitigated to a great extent.
