The MG Windsor EV is a new electric crossover in the mass-market EV space, while the Tata Punch EV micro SUV has been in the market for a slightly longer time. The MG EV comes with a single powertrain option, while the Punch EV gets multiple options. We recently tested the Windsor EV in real-world conditions to find out how long it lasts before its battery drains out.
In this report, we compare the real-world range of the crossover with that of the Tata Punch EV. The Punch EV used in the test is the Long-Range version with the larger battery pack.
Let’s begin:
We topped up their respective batteries to 100% before draining them out completely to find out their real-world range. It is to be duly noted that both these cars were separately tested.
Here's a quick look at their specs before we get to the result:

Battery |
38 kWh |
35 kWh |
Power |
136 PS |
122 PS |
Torque |
200 Nm |
190 Nm |

Front-wheel drive |
Claimed range |
332 km (MIDC) |
365 km (MIDC) |
As seen in the table, the Windsor EV’s battery pack is slightly larger than that of the Punch EV, and its electric motor also makes a greater output. However, the Punch EV offers a greater claimed range. Let’s see how that pans out in real-world conditions.
In order to find the most accurate real-world range of these cars, we test them on several different conditions: uphill, downhill, country roads, highways, and packed city conditions. Our varied testing conditions give you an average of the best and worst roads (in terms of efficiency) to determine how the EVs would perform in day-to-day conditions.
To tackle the heat, the AC was turned on in both these cars. The cars were driven in a very normal manner, similar to how any individual would drive without consciously trying to extract the most range from the car.
Here is a look at the final results and how long the two EVs could last before tapping out!:
MG Windsor EV |
Tata Punch EV |
|
Real-world range |
260.2 km |
258.6 km (with 1 percent charge remaining) |
Yes, real-world numbers are nowhere close to the claimed range figures. The primary reason for this is that the test agencies conduct the examinations under ideal conditions without taking real-world scenarios into consideration. From the table, we can conclude that both these EVs would more or less offer a very similar range in the real world.
The Windsor EV’s real-world numbers are closer to its claimed figures, with a difference of around 70 km. The same difference in the Punch stretches to around 100 km.
The Windsor EV is offered with the BaaS (Battery as a Service) scheme, wherein its prices start from Rs 9.99 (ex-showroom) plus the Rs 3.5 per km that you have to pay for the battery. For those who want an all-inclusive package, the prices range from Rs 13.5 lakh to Rs 15.5 lakh.
The Punch EV, on the other hand, is priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 14.44 lakh.
So, there is hardly anything to separate the two in terms of range. A range of 260-odd kilometres is good enough for your city commutes, but you will have to be careful if you decide to take these EVs for longer trips or inter-city travels. So with the range being at par with each other, you will have to depend solely on other factors to decide which car to opt for. To make things simple for you, here is our full comparison of these two EVs.
