Will the best-seller in the segment outrun the XUV400 EV in our real-world range test? Let’s find out!

The compact electric vehicle space is one of the hottest segments to watch out for with more and more new cars making their presence felt in this category. The MG Windsor EV is among the new entrants in the segment and is already the top-selling EV. We recently tested the Windsor EV in real-world conditions to find out how long it lasts before its battery drains out.

In this article, we will be comparing its real-world range with that of the Mahindra XUV400 EV, which we tested previously in real-world conditions.

Let’s begin:

As a standard procedure, the cars were juiced up to 100% before draining out completely to find out their real-world range. It is to be duly noted that both cars were tested separately.

A quick spec check before we get to the result:

MG Windsor EV

Mahindra XUV400 EV

Battery

38 kWh

39.5 kWh

Power

136 PS

150 PS

Torque

200 Nm

310 Nm

Drivetrain

Front-wheel drive

Front-wheel drive

Claimed range

332 km (MIDC Part I+Part II)

456 km (ARAI)

As seen above, the XUV400 is the superior one in terms of performance, but we are not here to talk about performance. While their battery specifications are nearly identical, the claimed range of the XUV400 is significantly higher than the Windsor EV. Do note that the claimed range is tested by different agencies for both EVs, but the difference is still a lot, at least on paper.

Real-world range

To give these cars a proper test and taste of real-world conditions, we have tested them on various different conditions: uphill, downhill, highways, country roads and packed city conditions. To survive the hot conditions, the AC was kept on as someone using any of these cars would usually do. It is important to also note that both cars were driven in a very sane manner with no hard acceleration.

Coming to the most essential question- Kitna Deti Hai? Or in EV language - How long does it last? Well, here are the results:

MG Windsor EV

Mahindra XUV400

Real-world range

260.2 km

289.5km

We know that just like the claimed fuel efficiency of ICE-powered cars, the claimed range of EVs is also not accurate and significantly higher than the real-world range. MG’s claimed number of 332 km in the real world was 72 km more than what we were able to achieve in the real world.

The XUV400 on the other hand managed to clock 289.5km with 1% charge still remaining. Even though the figure is slightly better than the Windsor EV, the number is still much lower than the claimed figures.

So in the real world, you can easily do an additional office roundtrip, an airport run or a shopping trip in the XUV400 EV. The 30-odd km of extra range offers more peace of mind to the buyer.

Price And Verdict

With the BaaS (Battery as a Service) program, the Windsor EV starts from Rs 9.99 (ex-showroom) plus the Rs 3.5 per km that you have to pay for the battery. However, if you want the all-inclusive package, the Windsor EV’s prices range from Rs 13.5 lakh to Rs 15.5 lakh.

The Mahindra XUV400 EV follows the traditional pricing approach and ranges between Rs 16.4 lakh to Rs 17.69 lakh.

Yes, the XUV400 with its greater range offers more satisfaction, but is also much more expensive. If you compare the top-spec variants, there is a price difference of over Rs 2 lakh. Overall, the Windsor EV feels like the more value-for-money purchase.
