The final production model is set for a 2024 debut

  • Retains the majority of the standard G-Class’ proportions but features a closed-off front grille, illuminated design elements all over, and retro-looking 22-inch wheels.

  • The rear spare tyre has been replaced by a storage compartment for items like charging cables.

  • It is powered by four electric motors and retains the G-Class’ ladder frame chassis.

  • Off-road-specifics will include a 2-speed gearbox.

It’s here. Mercedes-Benz has electrified the legendary G-Class in concept form, unveiling the Concept EQG at the 2021 Munich Motor Show (IAA Mobility 2021). Good news for the purists, this near-production off-roader is unmistakably a G-Wagen with a bit of that futuristic EQ flair.

In terms of design, the Concept EQG continues to honor the 40-year tradition of the brawny G-Class off-roader with exposed door handles, hinges, and boxy proportions. But it does distinguish from the G-Class with plenty of illuminated bits starting up front. With no internal combustion engine, the front grille is a closed-off panel featuring illuminated blue squares, the illuminated three-pointed star and a white border. This is complemented by circular LED DRLs on the headlights.

The illuminated bits continue with light bars on the side protective strips, with the roof featuring an LED light bar at the front and  a third brake light in the rear. The 22-inch wheels give off a retro feel with the design reminiscent of cars from the late 90s. While there is a slot for a spare tire carrier at the rear, you’ll notice there is a box instead of the spare tire. The box is actually a storage compartment for items such as charging cables.

The real question is, what’s underneath the hood? Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz haven’t divulged complete details on it, but it will be powered by four electric motors driving all four wheels, and will retain the ladder frame chassis like the standard G-Class. For off-road duties, it will also have a shiftable 2-speed gearbox.

While Mercedes-Benz hasn’t given a specific date for when the Concept EQG will go into production, the carmaker did reveal in its strategy for the decade that the all-electric G-Class will arrive around 2024.
