Yep, you read that right. 145 days is all it took for the new Maruti Suzuki Swift to find one lakh homes in India. Maruti claims the Swift has the distinction of being the fastest car model in India to do so. The sales success doesn’t really come as too much of a surprise since its elder sibling, the Dzire, too clocked 1 lakh sales in a matter of five months.
The Swift has always been the darling of Indian hatchback buyers. Its city-friendly proportions, agile manners - and with the update, the plethora of feel-good features - make it a super strong contender for anyone shopping for a hatchback under Rs 10 lakh. Then there’s the fact that the Swift offers all possible engine-gearbox combinations you can ask for. A manual and an AMT is offered with both engine options.
Speaking of engines, the Swift is soldiering on with its tried-and-tested 1.2-litre petrol motor and the 1.3-litre diesel. The petrol develops 84PS of power and 114Nm of torque, whereas the diesel engine is good for 75PS and 190Nm. And much like you folks reading this, we too are waiting (and rubbing our hands in glee) for a go-faster version of the Swift. A Swift RS with the Boosterjet, maybe!
Recently added feel-good features have also upped the desirability quotient of the new Swift. Bits such as the LED projector headlamps, the two-tone alloy wheels and the 7.0-inch touchscreen system are all premium hatch bits that’ve trickled down into the humble Swift.
Maruti’s little hatch goes up against the likes of Ford’s Figo (that’s due for an update soon) and Hyundai’s Grand i10.
