Maruti to introduce new 1.5-litre diesel in the Ciaz.
Some dealers are already accepting bookings for Rs 11,000 which is refundable.
It will be sold alongside the 1.3-litre diesel.
It will not be offered with SHVS mild-hybrid tech.
The 1.5 diesel will be available with the Delta, Zeta and Alpha variants only.
Will get a new 6-speed manual transmission.

Maruti Suzuki introduced a new 1.5-litre petrol engine with the Ciaz facelift just a few months ago. Now, it’s about to introduce another new engine to its compact sedan, this time a 1.5-litre diesel. The Ciaz with the new engine is due to be launched in February this year, i.e. next month. Some Nexa dealers are already accepting bookings of the car for a refundable amount of Rs 11,000. The introduction of the 1.5 diesel will take the number of engine options available with the Ciaz to three as Maruti plans to sell the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS alongside its new 1.5 diesel.

Maruti will not be discontinuing its current diesel at launch and will likely phase the engine out over time. The 1.5 will likely be the only diesel available in the future. The 1.5 will be available on the Delta, Zeta and Alpha variants only while the Sigma will continue to be powered by the 1.3-litre unit. Ironically though, unlike the petrol and the current diesel powerplants which use a double battery Li-ion and single battery mild hybrid systems, the new 1.5 will not come with SHVS mild hybrid technology. It will however, get a new 6-speed manual transmission.

The engine will reportedly be called DDiS225 and is expected to make 95PS of max power at 4000rpm and 225Nm of peak torque between 1500-2500rpm. Compared to the 1.3-litre DDiS200 which makes 90PS/200Nm, it is an increment of 5PS and 25Nm. In addition, our sources also indicate that the DDiS225 will return a claimed efficiency of 26.82kmpl. That is lower than that of the 1.3 DDiS by 1.27kmpl but higher than its rivals. In addition, the 1.5 will be launched as a BSIV-compliant engine and not a BSVI engine. It will however be upgraded to BSVI before the emission norms kick in in April 2020.

As for the pricing, it will command an increment over the current 1.3 Ciaz which is priced from Rs 9.19 lakh to Rs 11.02 lakh ex-showroom Delhi.
