Bajaj Chetak
The Bajaj Chetak is a very important scooter in the history of the Indian two-wheeler industry and has been the prized possession of many families for several years. Now, the iconic scooter is expected to make a comeback soon if some leaked images are to be believed. Bajaj’s current product portfolio consists of only geared motorcycles and with the Chetak it could usher in a new beginning for its discontinued scooter segment.

In the past, the Chetak carried the simple workhorse image, which will now be ditched for a new look with a modern style statement. Looking at the patent images, we can get an idea of the overall design philosophy the new Chetak is expected to carry. Starting from the front, the scooter features an attractive design with sharp and well-formed lines with hints of the original Chetak design. It gets an oval headlamp design that is accentuated by a chrome bezel. There are more chrome inserts that have been placed strategically to give the scooter a modern yet retro feel. The design philosophy continues to the other parts of the scooter as well, giving it a European look. It gets an air scoop on either side of the side body panel and an ergonomically designed seat for comfort. Even the incorporation of the hook in the red tanned seat hints that Bajaj has focused well on minute details. Towards the rear, although much is not visible, the scooter will sport brushed aluminium grab rails and LED turn indicators and brake lights.

Bajaj Chetak components

For cycle parts, the scooter will be equipped with a single-arm front suspension at the front and a monoshock at the rear. Braking will be handled by drum brakes at both ends, while an option for discs might be included later.

The all-new Bajaj Chetak is expected to be powered by a 125cc 4-stroke air-cooled engine. While power figures are yet unknown, expect them to be close to other 125cc scooter offerings in the market. A 150cc variant might also be introduced in the future. Also, while the original Chetak made use of a hand-operated manual gearbox, the new one will feature a variomatic gearbox like other scooters, considering the current market trend.

Although it would be too soon to predict when the new Chetak will be ready, expect the scooter to be introduced in the market by end of 2017 or early 2018.
