Audi has taken the wraps off the next generation A4 prior to its official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The new A4 gets an all-new chassis, gets new exterior and interior styling, is longer and lighter than its predecessor and gets an updated range of engines.

The new A4’s styling is a mix of crisp and sharp lines unlike the rounded styling of its rivals – the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. A wide trapezoidal single frame grille, wedge shaped headlights with new LED DRL design, a bulbous bonnet that will house under it a updated range of engines and stronger waistline with slightly flared wheel arches. The rear is neat and sharp as well with a nicely tapered boot lip and a set of split chrome tipped exhausts.

The interior is a lot more driver focused than before and features layers and materials of different colours to give it a premium feel. The 12.3-inch instrument cluster like all new Audis is all digital and shows all information needed like navigation, different dial designs, entertainment details and more. The A4 also has another centrally mounted 8.3-inch display screen and a beautifully designed two-zone climate control unit. The A4 also gets an inductive mobile charging pad, sensor controlled boot opening and a Bang and Olufsen surround sound system. Rear passengers get tablet-based entertainment and Audi’s latest MMI system with LTE network. The new A4 gets Audi’s Pre Sense City safety system that uses preventive braking at speeds under 40kmph.

The new Audi A4 sedan is 4,726mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,427mm high, making it 25mm longer and 16mm wider than its predecessor, while height remains the same. It is based on Audi’s latest MLB platform that grows the wheelbase by 12mm to 2,820mm. The new A4 gets an additional 24mm of headroom, 11mm more shoulder room up front and 23mm increase in rear legroom. Lightweight yet high strength steel and extensive use of aluminium for the body and roof panels has made the new and larger A4 about 120kg lighter than its predecessor.

Engine options include three turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and two four-cylinder diesel motors. In addition to these, two V6 diesel engines will also be offered for the new Audi A4. Power is said to have gone up by 25 percent while economy has improved by 21 percent over its predecessor. The 1.8-litre petrol motor is replaced by a turbocharged 1.4-litre unit developing about 150PS. Further up is a 2.0-litre TFSI unit available in two tune states – 190PS and 251PS. The 2.0-litre diesel also comes in two tune states – 150PS and 190PS. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel units come in two states of tune too – 221PS and 277PS. The 3.0-litre TDI models receive the Quattro four-wheel drive system. Gearbox options include a six-speed manual for the 4-cylinder units and a 7-speed DCT. The 277PS A4 gets a standard 8-speed automatic.
