Bajaj Auto has launched the 2009 version of its flagship Indian performance bike, the Pulsar 220 DTSi. The bike has been introduced at a very competitive price point of Rs 70,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) - something that we had predicted just before the bike was launched. The new bike is officially the fastest Indian motorcycle on the streets, a fact that has been confirmed by the ZigWheels.com team of reviewers and test riders. There's more on it in our blistering road test, but for now, we'll focus on the highlights of the new bike.
The 2009 Pulsar 220 DTSi is much more than just a non-fuel-injected version of the DTS-Fi. Visually, the bike has an all-black treatment with black forks, swingarm, alloys and engine paint. Other visual tit-bits are chiseled 3d graphics, a redesigned console background and revised clip-on handlebars.
The changes are starker in the innards of the bike. The new engine shares the same dimensions as the 220 DTS-Fi, but now breathes through a 32mm venturi carburetor with an auto-choke feature. Power output has been pegged at 21.04PS @ 8500rpm, and though the torque remains the same at 19.12Nm, it now comes in at a higher 8000rpm, signaling the revvy nature of the motor with ample torque to go with it.
With newfound performance gains and the enticingly affordable price point, Bajaj has continued with the Pulsar tradition of providing power to the people with the new 220 DTSi as well. To find out everything there is to know about the bike though, you'll have to check out our out-before-everyone-else road test!
