ZigOpinion: Will Tekton Change The Fortunes For Nissan India?

Nissan, a venerable Japanese automotive manufacturer, has been struggling in India in the past few years. In its glory days, Nissan sold cars like the Micra, Sunny, Terrano and Kicks on the mass-market side and even officially sold the 370Z and GT-R sportscars. Who’d have thought such a brand would see some dark times? That may be about to change in 2026 when Nissan launches the Tekton, its contender in the highly competitive compact SUV segment, to rival the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara and Victoris. What will the Tekton need to help Nissan be successful again?

What is Nissan Tekton?

Based on the upcoming Renault Duster, the Tekton is Nissan’s latest wild card, a hope (at least right now) that it may again see its glory days. It’s essentially what the Terrano was to the older Duster, and honestly, it’s something we’re dying to see again. The Terrano gave Duster buyers another option, a more sophisticated and less off-road-y version of the Renault. The Tekton is likely to follow the same recipe. 

The whole car hasn’t been revealed yet, but Nissan recently did share some teasers that show the Tekton will have a design very similar to one of its extremely popular cars globally – the Patrol. From the front, it looks like a mini Patrol. That is sure to attract many buyers, but the Tekton lettering on the bonnet should be a dealer-level accessory. There’s still time to fix this, Nissan. The Duster and the Tekton have good proportions; both look very SUV-like and less crossover-like. This, again, is sure to attract many buyers, especially those who are looking for true-blue SUVs. 

Nissan Tekton Interior: Will There Be Lots Left To Be Desired?

Nissan hasn’t revealed the interiors of the Tekton, but if history tells us anything, it could be a big disappointment (looking at you, X-Trail). However, there’s still some hope as it’s based on the third-gen Duster, which is a handsome-looking SUV and has a well-appointed interior. The Duster has a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital cluster, a wireless charger and more. This may not be up to the standards set in the segment, but anything less than this will not help Nissan in any shape or form. 

A sneak peek of the cabin has been shared by Nissan, which shows the passenger side of the dashboard, and it’s a good sign. At least in the image, the Tekton looks more premium than the third-gen Duster, and that’s exactly how Renault and Nissan should play this game. We say it again, keep the Tekton a more premium offering.

What Will Make Or Break The Tekton?

Price. It is what will decide the Fortune for Nissan India. The Magnite is priced quite brilliantly right now, and it does decently. The X-Trail is just downright too expensive for the bare minimum it is doing in the full-size SUV segment. If Nissan can price it competitively, while also maintaining the premium quotient, it could become Nissan’s fortune-teller.

The Tekton seems like a promising product, but it’s probably coming in a little too late and with too few features than what the bestsellers in the segment offer. There’s no sunroof (the market, fortunately or unfortunately, loves them!), there’s no word on the powertrain, but it could get a NA petrol and perhaps, even a hybrid powertrain. 

If the latter comes, it’s going to help the Tekton’s case a fair bit. Nissan also needs to seriously up its game in its after-sales service network. Basically, Nissan needs an all-around strategy to really see some success from the Tekton. And we need a proper French-Japanese-Romanian SUV in our markets to challenge the Cretas, the Seltoses, the Victoris and the likes.
