Nissan is betting big to go back to its glory days with the upcoming Tekton compact SUV. Most of you know that it’s based on the third-gen Renault Duster, which too, will soon launch in India. Both models will sort of help resurrect the brand from the sales slumber they are currently in.
While both are basically the same car underneath, let’s take a look at how both are different from each other and which one will appeal to which kind of buyer.
Both SUVs are very boxy-looking and will restart the trend of boxy compact SUVs, rather than looking like crossovers. Where Nissan has the benefit of “taking inspiration” from the Patrol, the Duster has its own design language that it doesn’t borrow from any other Renault or Dacia model.

Nissan will most likely position the Tekton as a more premium offering compared to the Duster, and that’s quite evident, too. The Tekton will get a full-width LED lightbar and a twin chrome strip running across the middle. The Duster, on the other hand, looks rugged and has big Renault lettering on the grille and Y-shaped LED DRLs. The Tekton also comes with ‘Tekton’ lettering on the bonnet.

Obviously, both are very similar from the side. Both have bulging wheel arches and C-pillar-mounted door handles. Both also have a tapered roofline and roof rails.

The only obvious difference between the two is the design of the alloy wheels. The Tekton has a multi-spoke design while the Duster has a Y-shaped design.

Just like the front, the rear also comes with Tekton lettering on the tailgate. The design of the connected taillamps also mimics the lighting signature up front. While the Tekton gets a squarish design for the taillamps, the Duster comes with a Y-shaped signature.

Both have rugged-looking rear bumpers, but the Tekton’s looks more urban compared to the Duster. You can also see a twin-pod spoiler on both the SUVs.

Inside is where you’ll see a stark difference between the two, while also being quite similar to each other. The Tekton, with its more premium positioning, is likely to come with premium materials like leather/leatherette and more sophisticated materials on the dashboard.

The Duster has a very utilitarian dashboard with Duster lettering on the passenger side and a concave design. Nissan hasn’t revealed or even teased the entire cabin, but did show the passenger side of the dashboard. Compared to the Duster, it can be seen with brass-coloured metal accents on the dash and AC vent, lending to the premium quotient it will have.

Features-wise, both are expected to be nearly identical. Expect both to come with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, a digital driver’s display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, and an Arkamys-tuned audio system. Safety features are likely to include six airbags, electronic stability control, electronic parking brake, hill assist and ADAS.
The Tekton and Duster will enter the highly competitive compact SUV segment to take on rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Honda Elevate.
The two SUVs have their own charm. The Tekton has a very premium vibe to it. The Patrol-like grille gives it a lot of sophisticated muscle, and the overall stance is proper SUV-like. On the other hand, the Duster has a very rugged look to match its off-road-y and utilitarian ethos and will appeal to buyers looking for something different in the cut-throat compact SUV segment.
