New facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu is ready to build up to 1,50,000 EVs

Vinfast Inaugurates new plant

VinFast officially kicked off its India operations in August this year with the inauguration of its electric vehicle assembly plant at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. This is the Vietnamese EV maker’s first manufacturing facility outside its home market, and one of three operational globally. A clear signal that India plays a significant role in its future global expansion plans.

Spread across 400 acres, the plant is equipped with advanced automated production lines and world-class quality systems. It includes a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Shop, Quality Control Centre, and a dedicated Logistics Hub. There’s also provision for an auxiliary supplier park, which is expected to attract local contractors over time.

VinFast says the factory will create 3,000 to 3,500 direct jobs and several thousand more in the supply chain ecosystem. Initial production capacity is pegged at 50,000 units a year, with scalability to 1.5 lakh units annually to meet rising demand.

Two EVs To Start With: VF 7 & VF 6

The first two models to roll out of Thoothukudi are the VF 7 and VF 6 the two SUV that have already been launched in India. Here’s a few highlights about the two first exciting offerings from Vinfast..

  • VF 7: The flagship for India, the VF 7 packs bold styling, dual-tone interiors, a 12.9-inch infotainment screen with a head-up display, ventilated front seats, and a glass panoramic roof. It will be offered in FWD (201 PS) and AWD (354 PS) versions, with a claimed global driving range of up to 532km. Prices start at Rs 20.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • VF 6: Positioned as the more accessible model, the VF 6 is a compact coupe-style SUV with a tech-rich cabin and a 59.6 kWh battery that delivers up to 468km range (claimed). Prices start at Rs 16.49 (ex-showroom), making it a direct rival to mainstream midsize SUVs once launched here.

Together, these two SUVs give VinFast both a premium edge and a mass-appeal entry point in India’s growing EV space.

Dealership & Service Network

VinFast plans aren’t just to focus on manufacturing but building an entire ecosystem for the brand in India. They have already tied up with multiple dealer groups across the country and plan to expand to 35 dealerships in 27+ cities by the end of the year. For after-sales, VinFast has partnered with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure for digital services, roadside assistance, and extended support for new buyers. It’s also teamed up with BatX Energies to develop battery recovery/reuse solutions that align well with its sustainability promise. VinFast has also partnered with top banks of India to offer easy loan facilities for new customers.

A Long-Term Bet On India

VinFast’s plans for the Thoothukudi plant also make it a strategic milestone that will serve both domestic buyers and export markets in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The company has confirmed export orders from these regions making India a significant global base.

For us, this means more EV choice in the near future. Starting with the VF 7 and VF 6, and then on to more mass appeal products like the VF 3, as VinFast gradually expands its portfolio. With production now underway, the brand has moved from being a new entrant to a manufacturer that is digging in for the long haul.
