VinFast VF6 And VF7 Achieve 5 Stars At Bharat NCAP! But Are They Safe...

Until recently, VinFast was just a distant buzz from Vietnam’s electric game. But now, with its India plans laid out and a massive Tamil Nadu facility in the works, the brand is ready to enter the ring. And the VF6, its compact all-electric SUV, is what it’s betting on to make the first impression.
We got to sample the VF6 on its home turf in Vietnam before it lands here, and while it’s still early days, this SUV throws up more than a few surprises. Here are five things you should know:
The VF6 doesn’t follow the SUV rulebook. In fact, it seems like it skipped that class altogether, and we’re not complaining. It trades bulk for balance, with a coupe-like silhouette that’s more about clean surfacing than rugged appeal. The front gets the now-familiar EV treatment: a blanked-out grille and sleek LED headlamps.

But the V-shaped DRL running into the bonnet? That’s a neat touch, subtle branding without shouting. Around the back, it’s more of the same: connected LED tail lamps, a tucked-in spoiler, and alloy wheels that look better in motion than they do standing still.
Step inside and you will notice what’s missing first: there’s no instrument cluster. All driver info, speed, range, navigation, you name it, is channelled through a single 12.9-inch screen in the centre. It’s not a compromise, though.

The layout is intentionally minimal, almost Scandinavian in its restraint. The steering wheel is a two-spoke flat-bottom unit, and the gear selection is done via buttons. Even the sunroof is fixed. It does need a shade on especially sunny days, but during our drive in Vietnam, heat insulation was not really a problem.
You would not expect a vehicle this size to pull off a roomy interior, but the VF6 does. There’s genuine space for five adults, thanks to the flat floor.

Even with the sloping roofline, rear headroom is better than expected. Legroom for a six-footer sitting behind another six-footer? Also acceptable.

As for boot space, 423 litres with the rear seats up, and a flat loading lip make loading easier. In short, it does the practical stuff without shouting about it.

Under the skin, you get to pick between the VF6 Eco and VF6 Plus. Same battery (59.6 kWh), but different outputs and personalities. The Eco makes 174 PS and claims up to 399 km of WLTP range. The Plus is quicker, 201PS and 310Nm, but slightly thirstier, with a 381 km range.

Fast-charging support is baked in, and a 20-80 percent top-up takes around 30 minutes with a DC charger. In city conditions, the difference between the two might come down more to how often you want to charge rather than how quickly you want to get to triple digits.
This is where the VF6 punches above its weight. Apart from the expected 7 airbags, ABS, and ESC, it also gets Level 2 ADAS features. That includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and a 360-degree camera system.

For a vehicle that’s aiming for the Rs 25 lakh price point, that’s a solid offering. And with India’s growing focus on safety ratings and tech, this could give the VF6 a quiet advantage.
The VinFast VF6 isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. It does not dress up like a rugged SUV. It does not flood you with chrome or overwhelm you with gimmicks. Instead, it focuses on the basics, different design approach, tech that makes sense, space that works, and features that matter.

It might not chase the market; it might just try to carve out its own space. Whether Indian buyers are ready for that kind of electric SUV, well, we will know soon enough. But the VF6 definitely has our attention!
