Now that Tata Motors has unveiled the new Sierra, we can see that the SUV features a futuristic and sophisticated design theme with many unique elements. That said, it is still a radical departure from what the original Sierra from the 90s was like, and some fans wish the new Sierra imbibed a few things from it. Let’s take a look at some of them:
One of the most iconic touches in the old Sierra was the very distinct ‘Alpine’ window design with a single-pane window, giving it that iconic silhouette we remember even today.
With the new Sierra, Tata has tried to mimic this iconic element with a black roof insert over the rear window, but it does not manage to fully replicate the same feeling from the old Sierra. That’s because Tata offers the new car in a 5-door avatar and had to integrate the C-pillar to ensure that it scores a good safety rating.

The original Sierra was a capable machine for its time, and could venture out to do some serious off-roading too. A major part of this was that it was based on body-on-frame chassis and had a 4x4 drivetrain with low range.
While we await to get behind the Sierra’s wheel, Tata will be offering its new car with a a front-wheel drive format and a monocoque chassis. Combine that with its sufficient ground clearance and you have a car that can be a soft-roader at best. That said, the upcoming Sierra EV could get an all-wheel drive setup.

While we agree that the more mainstream 5-door body style is a lot more practical for daily commutes and especially for using it as a family car, there is something about the style of a 3-door SUV that feels cooler.

Considering this, and the fact that the OG Sierra’s 3-door setup is synonymous to the Sierra brand, we feel Tata could have offered the new Sierra with an optional 3-door body style as well. While it may not have found many buyers, it could have given competition to the Mahindra Thar, which, besides the Force Gurkha, is the only other mass-market 3-door SUV on sale right now.

A tailgate-mounted spare wheel plays a big part in making an SUV look properly tough, and fans wish Tata incorporated one into the new Sierra as well to make it look more rugged and bring the design closer to the OG Sierra.

Besides just the style, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel is also easier to swap out as well in case of a puncture. For your reference, the spare wheel in the new Sierra is located underneath the car.

The OG Sierra had boxy proportions and squared-off design elements that enhanced its ‘SUV’ appeal and personality. Things like the rectangular headlamps, tall seating position, flat bonnet and black metal bumpers gave it a muscular look. The new Sierra, on the other hand, carries a more sophisticated aura with softer lines and more curves. So to say, it simply does not look as ‘butch’ enough as some fans would have liked it to be. However, the new Sierra has won a Red Dot Design Award as well.
The 2025 Tata Sierra takes a departure from the basic function-over-form design language of the original car, albeit with some retro elements retained. That said, we wish it carried a more butch look to tie it in with the iconic Sierra brand.
