This small but crucial safety feature for the rear passenger has been missing from most mass market models till now

  • The safety upgrade has been initiated as per the Indian government’s directive.

  • It comes a few months after Hyundai standardised four and six airbags in some of its cars.

  • All cars from the Venue and above in Hyundai’s lineup already get ESC and VSM as standard.

  • The Verna, Tucson and Ioniq 5 are the only Hyundai cars to get ADAS in India.

As per the Indian government’s directive and in a bid to further improve safety in its cars, Hyundai India has finally taken the step of providing 3-point seatbelts and seatbelt reminders for all seats as standard across its lineup. It remains to be seen whether the carmaker will also offer an adjustable headrest for the rear centre passenger in its more affordable cars.

Ahead of tightening safety norms, Hyundai has already made major improvements across its lineup in the first half of 2023. It started with the facelifted Grand i10 Nios and Aura getting four airbags as standard, while the Creta and Alcazar got a minimum of six soon after. Even its bread-and-butter SUV from the sub-4m segment, the Venue, was given four airbags from its base variant earlier this year.

Not only that, all cars positioned above the Venue in Hyundai’s Indian lineup – including the two N Line models – get electronic stability control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), and hill-start assist as standard. The Verna, Tucson and Ioniq 5 are the only cars in Hyundai’s Indian portfolio to come with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which include adaptive cruise control, auto-emergency braking and lane keep assist.

Hyundai’s focus on safety features was reiterated when it launched the 6th-generation Verna, which comes with a lot more as standard, such as six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and rear defogger.

While Hyundai has become the first mass-market carmaker to offer these safety updates as standard across its entire lineup in India, other marques aren’t far behind either. Maruti recently introduced the 3-point seatbelt and even an adjustable headrest for the rear centre passenger in the Baleno. Other carmakers like Toyota, Mahindra and Skoda-VW have already been offering these features on some of their SUV offerings since launch.
