While premium features, tacky designs and fuel-efficient powertrains have been on the rise and are what makes most modern cars interesting, these cars are also incomplete without a powerful engine or a silent electric motor that goes weeeee…
The impact of sheer power and performance will never lose its demand, especially among those who enjoy driving their cars. Any powerful car can be bought if you are not on a restricted budget, but there are only certain cars that offer top-notch power and joy at a particular budget. So in this article, we have taken up to a Rs 30 lakh budget and listed down the cars that offer over 200 PS of power in the mass-market category.
Let’s begin…
Price: 13.99 lakh to Rs 24.89 lakh
Starting with the ICE-powered SUVs, you have the Scorpio N. Popularly known as the Big Daddy, the Scorpio N’s mighty looks are matched by a mighty powertrain. The Mahindra SUV is offered in both petrol and diesel engine options, including a 2.2-litre diesel unit and a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The petrol engine is the most powerful version and crosses the 200 PS figure! To be precise, it makes 203 PS and 370 Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, and power is delivered to the rear wheels. The Scorpio N also comes with a 4x4 option, which is offered only with the diesel engine.
Price: Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 25.73 lakh
Another Mahindra SUV on the list which provides the power that you need to propel a mid-size SUV. The Mahindra XUV700 is not just known for its premium features but also appreciated for its capable powertrains. Just like the Scorpio N, the XUV700 also comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine and a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine, and it is actually Petrol mill that just about hits the 200 PS mark. It makes exactly 200 PS and 380 Nm and can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The XUV700 is around 30-50 PS more powerful than its rivals and is also capable of giving a tough fight to some of the entry-level luxury cars that are priced much higher.
Price: Rs 24.99 lakh to Rs 33.99 lakh
The only other automaker that is offering over 200 PS under Rs 30 lakh! The Atto 3 is BYD’s entry-level offering in India and is slightly more expensive than the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, and the Hyundai Creta Electric. It is offered with two battery packs: 49.92 kWh and 60.48 kWh. The front-wheel drive electric motor produces up to 204 PS and 310 Nm. It reaches the 100 kmph figure in just 7.3 seconds.
Price: Rs 26.9 lakh to Rs 29.9 lakh
The other BYD is on the list and is also the only MPV among SUVs. The eMax7 is something you would buy for long-distance travels and if you have a large family. The focus is more on range here, but a healthy power figure doesn’t hurt. Compared to the Atto 3, it gets a larger 71.8 kWh battery pack and a higher claimed range. You can head over to this story if you want to see our comparison of the Atto 3 and eMax7 under the Rs 30 lakh mark.
The eMax7 also makes an identical 204 PS and 310; however, being larger and heavier than the Atto 3, it hits the 100 kmph mark in a slower 8.6 seconds.
Price: Rs 18.9 lakh to Rs 26.9 lakh
The BE 6 and the car that’s up next are unlike the other cars that cross the 200 PS mark, but not by a big margin. In fact, even their lower-spec variants beat the 200 PS figure by a decent margin. The BE 6 has been in the news for all the right reasons (mostly) and offers performance that can put more expensive cars to shame. Since both of its powertrains produce over 200 PS, here is a detailed table of its specifications:
Parameter |
Mahindra BE 6 |
|
Battery Pack |
59 kWh |
79 kWh |
Power |
231 PS |
286 PS |
Torque |
380 Nm |
380 Nm |
Drivetrain |
Rear-wheel drive |
Rear-wheel drive |
0-100 kmph |
- |
6.7 seconds |
As seen in the table above, the top-spec BE with 286 horses does the nought to 100 kmph run in just 6.7 seconds! This is BMW 3 Series territory. The BE 6 ‘s top speed is around the 200 kmph mark.
Price: Rs 21.9 lakh to Rs 30.50 lakh
The XEV 9e is the larger alternative to the BE 6, especially if you want more space and larger boot space. It comes with the same powertrain options that have been listed in the table above, with up to 286 PS on tap! So you might be thinking that with a larger size and more weight, the XEV 9e might be slower. Yes, it is slower to the 100 kmph mark, but by just a 0.1 difference as it reaches the triple digit mark in 6.8 seconds.
It is interesting to see four Mahindra SUVs on the list! The Indian automaker has been generous in giving enthusiasts and the common Indian buyer the opportunity to experience power at a budget. Out of the 6 cars, 4 are EVs, adhering to the notion that EVs offer more power and performance than our soulful petrol or diesel engines.
