BYD unveils Super e-Platform globally that boasts crazy fast charging speeds.
The 1,000 Volts architecture supports charging capabilities of 1,000 kW, adding 2 km of range per second.
A five-minute charge can provide up to 400 km of driving range.
Includes a 789 PS motor capable of achieving speeds of over 300 kmph.
Its India launch is improbable as yet.
Barring the long queue at fuel pumps, we’re used to refuelling our ICE-based cars in quick time. However, that’s not really the case with EVs, where you’d have to wait a while as it tops. BYD, the Chinese automaker has found a solution to that with the globally unveiled Super e-Platform which is capable of being charged so fast that you can juice it up with about 400 km of range in a mere five minutes.
Now that is something that almost cuts off the difference between the refilling times of EVs and ICE vehicles. While it is currently proposed for its home nation China, can we expect it in India anytime soon? That remains uncertain. For now, let’s explore this new technology.
The Super e-Platform developed by BYD is equipped with a 1,000 V high-voltage system that achieves a peak charging speed of 1,000 kW. This means EV users can add two kilometres of driving range per second. In real-world terms, a five-minute charge can give an impressive 400 km of range, making EV charging as fast as refuelling a petrol or diesel car.
BYD has also developed a 1360 kW mega-charger, which is a powerful liquid-cooled unit designed to support the Super e-Platform's immensely fast charging speed. This mega-charger is capable of refilling up the battery pack without any significant overheating or battery damage. BYD plans to implement over 4,000 of these charges in China.
The Super e-Platform also has a new 789 PS motor that is capable of speeds of over 300 kmph. The HAN L and TANG L will be the first two models based on this platform and will be sold exclusively in China.
BYD India has been expanding its presence on our shores. They now have four EVs in their lineup including the Atto 3 and Sealion 7 SUVs, the Seal sedan and the eMax7 MPV. With their foothold still being in the nascent stage here, the arrival of the Super e-Platform in the country could take a while.
In fact, the biggest challenge would be infrastructure. The platform requires high-powered megawatt chargers, which are not yet available in India. BYD plans to build these megawatt flash-charging stations in China. If a similar initiative could be taken in India, the adoption of this platform could be feasible.
Fast charging has always been one of the biggest concerns for EV owners, and BYD’s new innovation could bring EVs a step closer to mainstream adoption. While it may take time for such advanced charging infrastructure to reach India, this surely promises a future for mass EV adoption.
