In the latest Zig fuel efficiency test, we have the new-generation 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift with us. The fourth-gen hatchback has got a new downsized petrol engine that claims to deliver better fuel efficiency. And in this report, our intention is simple - find out if the new-gen Swift is as fuel efficient as Maruti Suzuki claims it to be.
To find that out, we have the Swift AMT on test. But before that…
Powering the new-gen Swift is a new downsized three-cylinder 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that can be had with either a manual or an AMT. Here’s a look at the detailed specifications:

Claimed Fuel Efficiency |
24.8 kmpl / 25.85 kmpl |
Maruti Suzuki claims the Swift AMT is capable of delivering 25.85 kmpl, which is impressive. But to check out if it’s true, we tank up the Swift to its brim and drive in town. Post calculating the city fuel efficiency, we brim it up once again and head out on the Mumbai-Pune expressway to calculate its highway fuel efficiency.

Mind you, we weren’t hypermiling the car. Rather, we drove the car just like any normal person would do with the AC on and trying to maintain steady speeds. And here are the numbers we have achieved with the fourth-generation hatchback:
|
Claimed |
Real-world |
|
|
City |
25.75 kmpl |
15.84 kmpl |
|
Highway |
22.13 kmpl |

As seen on the above table, the Swift returned 15.84 kmpl in town, which isn’t close to what the claimed figures suggest. But on the expressway, that number increased to 22.13 kmpl, which is just around 3 kmpl shy of the claimed figures.
The claimed figures are tested in a very stringent manner and are tough to replicate in the real world, but the results we have got are still quite impressive.
To know our impressions of the new Swift, you can check out our in-depth first drive review. Prices start from Rs 6.49 lakh onwards (ex-showroom), putting it in contention with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Citroen C3 as well as micro SUVs such as the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
