  • Mahindra Thar EV concept teased, called the Thar.e.
  • Concept is finished in bright yellow and seems to get a closed-off slatted grille.
  • Features a modern interpretation of the current model’s vertically stacked tail lamps.
  • We suspect both three-door and five-door versions to be showcased.
  • Likely to be based on a body-on-frame chassis like the current ICE model.
  • More details to be revealed on August 15.

Yes, you read the headline right. The Mahindra Thar is going electric. Called the Thar.e, it will break cover in concept form in South Africa on August 15, 2023. The SUV marque has teased the electric off-roader for the first time and here’s what we could discern from the video snippet.

The video teaser just gives a minor insight into what we can expect. For starters, the concept is finished in a bright shade of yellow. Its hood features a bold ‘RE.BORN ELECTRIC’ decal and below it seems like a closed-off slatted grille. Then there’s the vertically stacked tail lamps, which look like a modern interpretation of the current model’s tail lamps. It also gets a Thar.e badging on the tailgate.

It still remains to be seen if this will be based on the three-door or the five-door version of the off-roader. But we suspect Mahindra could showcase the Thar.e with both the body styles as well as multiple roof options.

The Mahindra Thar.e is likely to be based on a body-on-frame platform, like the current model, which makes it very capable over rough roads and terrains. It’s still too early to talk about technical specifications. But we do know Mahindra will be banking on Volkswagen for the supply of its electric powertrain components. So the Thar.e could be using VW’s electric powertrain.

Whether the Thar.e will go into production or not is something we’ll be coming to know on August 15. But if it does, then that would be great news for off-road enthusiasts looking for an electric off-roader. Along with the Thar.e, Mahindra will be showcasing a pick-up truck concept as that’s likely to be based on the Scorpio N. More details about it can be found here
