BYD India has announced that the upcoming e6 facelift will be rechristened as the eMax 7 for our market. This model is already sold as the M6 internationally and is expected to go on sale in India in the coming weeks. Apart from its cosmetic revisions, one of the biggest updates for this model is its ability to seat seven occupants (pre-facelift version was a 5-seater).
Design updates made to the eMax 7 are minor, but surely noticeable. You get a new grille with the updated ‘BYD’ logo and a new set of LED headlights. The bumper below has also been tweaked and has a minimalistic design. Save for the new 10-spoke alloys, no changes have been made to the profile. And at the back, the main talking point is the new connected LED tail lamp setup.

One of the biggest talking points about the cabin is the availability of a third row of seats in the eMax 7. Internationally, you can get either a 6- or a 7-seater, but our market is likely to get only the latter, considering the ‘7’ in the name. The dashboard has also been refreshed with new materials, a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen (that rotates), a new steering wheel, and an updated drive selector.

Internationally, the e Max 7 now comes with features such as powered front seats with ventilation, automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger and a powered tailgate. Passenger safety is taken care of by six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors as well as ADAS.

While the eMax 7 carries forward the 71.8 kWh battery pack, there has been one big change and that’s the power output. The electric motor now puts out 150 PS and 310 Nm, which is a big jump from the pre-facelift model that developed 94 PS and 180 Nm. BYD says the new eMax 7 delivers a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) claimed range of 530 km, however, the claimed range of the India-spec model is expected to be different.

We expect the upcoming BYD eMax 7 to command a premium over the outgoing model, which was priced from Rs 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom). It’s an electric alternative to the likes of the Toyota Innova Crysta, Toyota Innova Hycross and Maruti Suzuki Invicto.
