Convertible cars in India are always head-turners, combining eye-catching design with solid performance. However, the segment remains niche, even among premium buyers, given our country's weather conditions. Yet, MG is ready to challenge this with the Cyberster, which will be the first all-electric roadster upon launch in India.
It will not only strengthen MG’s lineup but also offer luxury car buyers a performance-focused, eco-friendly alternative. With bookings underway, the Cyberster is already generating buzz, making it the perfect time to explore what it offers and its potential impact on MG’s overall brand presence in our market.
For a more exclusive and premium experience, MG will offer the Cyberster in India through its Select dealerships. Following the M9, the Cyberster will be the second model from the British automaker to be sold via these exclusive outlets. We have seen similar strategies with brands like Maruti, which offers its models through both Arena and Nexa dealerships, the latter catering to buyers seeking a more upscale ownership experience.
However, MG's Select dealerships aim even higher, targeting buyers entering the luxury car segment with high-end offerings. In the case of the Cyberster, being the BMW Z4. Notably, MG has planned to open 14 Select outlets across 13 cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Pune.
MG will offer the Cyberster in India with a 77 kWh battery pack coupled to a 510 PS/725 Nm dual electric motor setup. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.2 seconds, the same time it took to set the record as the fastest car on Sambhar Salt Lake. The Cyberster also features an all-wheel-drive system and delivers a WLTP-claimed range of 443 km, which is fairly remarkable for a performance-oriented electric convertible.
It's loaded with features such as a four-screen setup, including a 7-inch infotainment system, a 10.25-inch central digital driver's display, and a touch-controlled unit for climate controls. Other features include an 8-speaker Bose sound system and 6-way electrically adjustable heated seats with a memory function. Safety features include six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ADAS.
While there is no direct competition to the MG Cyberster, it will serve as an all-electric alternative to the BMW Z4. For context, the Z4 is powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo inline-six petrol engine that produces 340 PS (-160 PS) and 500 Nm (-225 Nm), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Z4 achieves a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of 4.5 seconds.
While details on the pricing of the MG Cyberster are not out yet, our reports suggest it could be offered with MG's BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) battery rental program, with an expected price of around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom). In comparison, the BMW Z4 costs Rs 93 lakh (ex-showroom), significantly higher than the Cyberster.
With the Cyberster’s launch, MG will enter a new segment, making a strong impression amongst enthusiasts as well as its owners while enhancing its brand image. As India’s luxury car market gradually embraces electric mobility, the Cyberster will stand out as a roadster not only catering to a niche but also appealing to buyers entering the premium car segment, further strengthening MG's foothold.
The MG Cyberster is not just another EV; it offers more with its all-wheel drive setup and a staggering 510 PS, delivering some serious performance. Launching from 0-100 kmph in just 3.2 seconds, the territory is usually reserved for supercars. But it’s not just about numbers.
The convertible roof and scissor doors give the Cyberster a dramatic presence, making it impossible to ignore. Step inside, and the fighter jet-inspired cockpit with four screens will offer an immersive driving experience to its buyers.
The MG Cyberster is an exciting proposition with its sleek design and exhilarating performance. But in the real world, it comes with a few trade-offs. For starters, it only seats two, making it more of a personal indulgence than a practical daily driver. Then there’s the matter of our roads. Low-slung sports cars and India’s unpredictable speed bumps aren’t exactly a match made in heaven. Unless you carefully plan your routes, scraping the bottom of a car like the Cyberster could become an all-too-common experience.
While the Cyberster boasts an impressive WLTP-claimed range, real-world conditions will be the true test. And though India’s charging infrastructure is expanding, fast-charging stations that work reliably are still not as common as one would hope.
The launch of the Cyberster will position MG in buyers' minds as a more versatile brand, one that not only focuses on mass-market offerings but also caters to enthusiasts. Unlike MG’s current lineup, the Cyberster combines bold styling with thrilling speed, a mix not typically associated with the brand.
And if MG manages to price it aggressively with its BaaS service, owning Cyberster could be quite tempting. But what do you think?
Can it carve its own space and make an impact, or will its shortcomings hold it back? Let us know in the comments below.
