As revealed in a recent announcement to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Maruti Suzuki is accelerating its EV strategy for India. The Indian auto giant has officially confirmed plans to launch four more battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2030, following the launch of the e Vitara, its first all-electric SUV showcased at Auto Expo 2025.
Maruti has so far focused on ICE-based cars including CNG-powered vehicles and hybrid cars. With an ambitious target to capture over 50 per cent of the Indian car market, they are set to ramp up their EV offerings while also expanding their production capabilities to meet both domestic and global demand.
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to enter the electric car market with the e Vitara and they look forward to only solidifying their position hereafter. They aim to bring three more BEVs by the end of the decade. There are speculations that their next EV could be the Fronx EV following which they might as well tap into electrifying the Ertiga. It is no surprise that the Toyota Innova EV concept, recently shown at a motor show in Indonesia, somehow hints at a potential for good demand in the electric MPV segment, especially in the commercial sector for fleet operators and ride-sharing services.
Maruti Suzuki’s third EV remains under speculation, with possibilities ranging from a smaller, more affordable electric hatchback to a larger premium EV if the brand follows a top-down approach similar to Hyundai and Tata.
To be able to meet this growing demand, they’ll also have the production capacity scaled up with a new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana and the existing Gujarat plant will also support EV manufacturing. They aim to ramp up production to 4 million units per year so India could be an export hub for global players.
The Maruti e Vitara is a compact electric SUV equipped with a 48.8 kWh and a 61.1 kWh battery pack and a claimed range of over 500 km. It gets a heft of modern features like a fixed glass roof, a 10-way powered driver seat, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, 7 airbags and ADAS features. In its India-spec trim, it comes with a front-wheel drive option only and could be priced between Rs 17 lakh to Rs 23 lakh (ex-showroom). The car has already reached dealerships and will be launched sometime later very soon.
Maruti Suzuki’s EV roadmap is promising, but it comes relatively late compared to rivals like Tata and Hyundai. However, given its strong brand loyalty, wide dealership network, and cost-effective approach, its EVs could fast-track mainstream adoption in India.
