It has been two year and just little over 5000 km but now my car has started showing check engine light on dashboard.Is this serious issue?.

I drive approx 300-400 kms a week. The performance of the car as been very good considering my usage, which is 80% highways and 20% off roads. Only two issues - fog lights (there is great scope of improvement) & seat. I get an average of 17-17.5 kmpl of complete highway drive & 15-15.5 kmpl for city + highway drive.
