Will it come to Indian shores?

  • Volkswagen Tiguan X is an SUV-coupe version of the standard model.
  • It’s longer and wider but shorter than the standard model.
  • Offered with the 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine in two states of tune.

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the Tiguan X, an SUV-coupe version of the Tiguan, that aims to turn heads with its swoopy styling. Yes, it does look undecidedly sporty and your better half may choose this over the standard version. Before you start drooling, there’s one big catch but before that let’s explore the Tiguan X.

Starting with the design, the Volkswagen Tiguan X shares everything with the recently unveiled facelifted Tiguan right up to the front doors. The slatted grille, sporty-looking headlamps, and even the aggressive bumpers are all the same. It’s from the B-Pillar that the roof starts to slope down like a coupe and flows cleanly to the boot lid. There’s also a strong shoulder line that adds character while the large dual-tone alloy wheels give it a proportionate stance. The rear naturally looks different and comes with connected LED tail lamps, with the ‘Tiguan’ name tag embossed on it.

In terms of dimensions, the Tiguan X is 4,764mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,628mm tall. It sits on a 2,791mm long wheelbase. Here’s how it compares with the India-spec Tiguan Allspace:

Though the interior of the Tiguan X is yet to be revealed, expect it to be largely similar to the standard model. You can read more about the recently unveiled Tiguan and its features list in our detailed report.

The VW Tiguan X is offered with a 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine that comes in two states of tune: 186PS/330Nm and 220PS/380Nm. Both versions drive all four wheels via VW’s 4MOTION tech. A 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission is the only gearbox on offer.

Coming to the big catch, if you were expecting this Tiguan X to come to India, you will be disappointed. It’s limited to the Chinese market, just like the China-spec Kodiaq GT SUV-coupe. Currently, VW offers the Tiguan AllSpace in India and will soon re-introduce the standard 5-seater Tiguan in 2021. The standard Tiguan will lock horns with the Skoda Karoq and Jeep Compass
