Spy shots indicate a near-production model with a radar module up front, hinting at ADAS

  • Jeep will launch a made-in-India three-row SUV by 2022.

  • The Brazil-spec model has been spotted testing.

  • It will rival the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, and MG Gloster.

  • Expected to be priced between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 40 lakh.

Jeep’s preparing to up its game with a new 7-seater SUV. Codenamed the H6, it will challenge heavyweights like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour in pricing, features, and seating capacity. The SUV will be made in India and launch in 2022.

However, its Brazilian counterpart looks ready for production, as is evident from these new spy shots. The recent teasers tell us the SUV’s global reveal will soon be in Brazil and that it may be called ‘Commander’ in the South American nation. However, the name has already been trademarked in India, thus leaving room for speculation that it might be called ‘Patriot’ here.

The teaser also revealed a studded seven-slat grille, which can be seen here. The spy shots give us a glimpse of the stylish single LED DRL strip on both sides. At the back, you can notice the Grand Cherokee-like high-set wrap-around LED tail lamps. Typical Jeep elements (think the squared-off wheel arches and upright stance) aside, expect the upcoming SUV to have a distinctive style, considering the carmaker has said it won’t be inspired by the Compass.

Expect it to come teeming with features like a panoramic sunroof, a large infotainment system with UConnect 5, multi-zone climate control, a digital instrument cluster, and ventilated front seats. The Brazilian test mule also featured a radar module up front, hinting that there could be Advanced Driver Assistance Systems onboard. ADAS consists of features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane keeping assist.

We reckon the upcoming SUV will use Jeep’s 2.0-litre diesel and turbo-petrol engines. The former, also seen in the Compass, could be provided in the H6 in a higher state of tune, but with the same 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic options. The turbocharged petrol engine could be the same as the one in the Wrangler Unlimited, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. Considering it is a Jeep, expect a 4x4 drivetrain, but don’t rule out a more affordable 4x2 option as well.

The H6 is expected to launch in India around 2022 at prices ranging from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). Thanks to its size and probable pricing, it will be positioned above the Compass and on par with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, Mahindra Alturas G4, and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq.
