Here Are The 5 Most Fuel Efficient BS6 Cars According To Our Test Data

The much-anticipated BS6 emission norms are almost here and set to be implemented from April 1. If you’ve been missing out on the action, the Indian government has made it impossible to register BS4 cars post the above-mentioned date. Almost all carmakers are busy converting their lineup into BS6. Most of the new cars introduced in the last few months are also BS6-complaint. So, from our own testing sheet, here are the five most fuel-efficient cars we’ve tested so far:

Toyota Glanza Petrol Manual  -- 24.25kmpl

Yes, Toyota’s rebadged version of the Glanza is the most fuel-efficient car we’ve tested, returning a staggering highway fuel economy figure of 24.25kmpl. The hatchback also registered a city economy figure of 17.13kmpl. The manual gearbox version of the Glanza powered by the 1.2-litre petrol is the variant we’re talking about here. This engine produces 90PS and 113Nm with the help of a mild-hybrid system. Now you know how the Glanza tops the list. 

Maruti Suzuki Swift Petrol Manual -- 22.43kmpl

This list is bound to have a Maruti and this is not the only one either. The Swift powered by the 1.2-litre VTVT petrol engine returned a maximum fuel economy figure of 22.43 during highway runs while it also managed to deliver 16.10kmpl inside the city. This engine puts out 83PS and 113Nm of twist to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Swift is also one of the most fun-to-drive hatchbacks on sale right now even though it has lost some spark over the years.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Petrol Manual-- 21.88kmpl

Yes, yet another Maruti Suzuki and this time around, it’s none other than the S-Presso. The manual transmission variant of the S-Presso returned an impressive fuel economy figure of 21.88kmpl and 19.33kmpl on the highway and in the city, respectively. The 1.0-litre K10B petrol engine is peppy enough as it delivers 68PS of peak power and 90Nm of peak torque. Furthermore, the AMT variants also managed to return fuel efficiency figures of 19.96kmpl for the city and 21.73kmpl for the highway.

2020 BMW X1 Diesel Automatic -- 21.71kmpl

We know what you are thinking. S-Presso to BMW X1, that’s a big leap, right. Now thanks to a frugal diesel engine, the X1 is currently the fourth most efficient car we’ve tested. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine that develops 190PS and a massive 400Nm to the front wheels. Yes, that sounds like a recipe for some torque steer. But the motor is frugal as it delivered 21.71kmpl during the test runs while it also maintained a commendable 13.43kmpl in our city runs.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E 220 d Automatic -- 20.79kmpl 

Another surprise comes from the Mercedes-Benz E 220 d which returned an impressive fuel economy of 20.79kmpl on our highway runs. This luxo-barge is powered by an all-aluminium 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 194PS/400Nm of torque. These figures are transferred to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox. If you’re wondering, the sedan also returned a fuel economy figure of 12.83kmpl inside the city.
