These pictures could be the last set of spy shots of the upcoming Thar. The offroader, which has been spotted testing for ages now, will be revealed on August 15. While we can’t wait to have a look at it in person, these spy shots have spilt most details.

The wait for the Thar seems worth it as Mahindra has gone all out to expand its appeal for varied buyers. It has even addressed all the major chinks found in its predecessor. For starters, the 2020 Thar will feature-forward facing rear seats, which are safer and also more comfortable. Then there’s the super lengthy feature list in contrast to the first-gen version that was known for its barebones nature.

Confirmed features include roof-mounted speakers, touchscreen infotainment system which should feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, cruise control, front power windows, and even a removable hard top! How cool is that? On the safety front, it’ll feature dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

The 2020 Thar borrows basic design elements from its predecessor but the attention to detail in the second-gen model is spot on. We particularly liked the Thar engraving in the tail lamps while the LED DRLs on the front seem to be a straight lift from the Wrangler. The large alloy wheels, possibly 17-inches, also elevate the overall design.

The Thar is likely to be offered with two powertrains options: a 140PS 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and a 190PS 2.0-litre mStallion petrol. Both engines are expected to be offered with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. What’s more, both could be offered with a low-range transfer case. You do require a proper 4X4 drivetrain to tackle through the sand dunes of the Thar desert, right?

Mahindra has left no stone unturned to ensure the upcoming Thar is a more complete and likeable product. It’s also eyeing a wider audience rather than just off-road enthusiasts. Don’t expect it to come cheap though, with the base variant likely to have a starting price around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
