Mercedes-Benz India has launched the GLA-Class luxury compact SUV at Rs 32.75 lakh, ex-showroom. The GLA takes on the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 in a long awaited battle. Mercedes had a huge gap to fill in their product portfolio by not being present in this segment until now as the X1 and Q3 had the market all to themselves. But now the GLA-Class is here and as we found out, it’s quite a competent package. Read more about it in our Mercedes-Benz GLA review

The GLA is built on Mercedes’ new front wheel drive MFA platform like the A and B-Class. At present it is only available in its present variants as a front wheel drive but a all wheel drive version will follow. Mercedes will also launch the GLA45 AMG next month. At the launch there are two engines on offer. The petrol is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with 184PS/300Nm output. It can do the 0-100kmph sprint in a claimed 7.6 seconds on its way to a 205kmph top speed. The diesel is a 2.1-litre 4-cylinder unit with 136PS/300Nm on tap. It takes a leisurely 9.9 seconds to hit the ton from standstill but performance is sprightly lower down the rev range. Both cars come mated with the tried and tested 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and also come equipped with paddle shifters as standard.

On the interior front, the GLA is designed on the lines of its hatchback siblings. Large panoramic sunroof, choice of interior colour packages, sat-nav, rear parking camera with parking sensors, electric seats for driver and passenger, tyre pressure monitoring sensors, attention assist and seven airbags, the GLA has it all.
Mercedes has also increased the ride height of the GLA for India by 30mm to handle our road conditions. With 183mm of clearance, it can handle all our roads have on offer. In terms of efficiency, the petrol GLA has an ARAI certified efficiency figure of 13.8kmpl and the diesel posts an impressive 17.9kmpl.
