For those eagerly awaiting for a little more oomph in the upcoming 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45, here’s some great news. Mercedes-AMG has finally announced the official engine specifications of the 2020 A45 that will replace the older M133 four-cylinder engine, and the mad hatters from Stuttgart are going all out.

The biggest change in the 2020 A45 is that it will be powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, designated M139. It will come in two variants. The base variant that redlines at 7,200rpm delivers 387PS of power and 480Nm of torque. The more powerful ‘S’ variant puts out 412PS of peak power along with 500 Nm of torque. The ‘S’ trim will also redline at 7,200rpm. With these performance figures on the ‘S’ variant, the A45 will sport the most powerful factory-made four-cylinder engine offered in a production vehicle.

Both variants use a twin turbocharger but the difference between the two is in the boost pressure. The base variant provides 27.6 psi of boost, whereas the ‘S’ variant produces 30.5 psi. Both engine variants will be mated with an eight-speed DCT transmission, coupled with an all-wheel-drive system.
Mercedes’s aim with the introduction of this four-cylinder monster is to provide sportier power delivery with the A45. The older M133 engine used to deliver diesel-like flatline acceleration at around 2,000rpm. The new M139 engine on the A45 will generate peak torque at 5,200rpm while still producing a decent surge of acceleration at around 3,000rpm.

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG A45 is a hot-hatch that is set to compete with the likes of the Audi RS3 and the upcoming BMW M2 CS. With performance and exuberance at the centre of its design, the latest iteration of the A45 will get tweaks and enhancements along with adjustable dampers. It will also come with a quad-oval exit exhaust system. The new A Class will be 10mm longer than its predecessor and will get a new floor pan along with a refined body structure for better rigidity. The new A45 will also have a wider front track and will be fitted with 18-inch wheels as standard. 19-inch wheels will also be offered as an option.

After the launch of the AMG A45 in July, Mercedes will introduce its new powerhouse in other cars like the GLA45 and the CLA45 as well. While there is no word on when the new A45 will hit our roads, we surely cannot wait to drive this beast!
