Mercedes-Benz India has launched the GLE 300d in a sportier looking AMG Line trim. Earlier, the AMG Line version was reserved for the more powerful 450 petrol and diesel variants. With this update, all variants of the GLE are available only with the sportier looking trim and the base model (without AMG Line) has now been discontinued.
Here’s where the newly launched GLE variant stands in the variant lineup:
Variants |
Ex-showroom Price |
GLE 300d (Now Discontinued) |
Rs 96.65 lakh |
GLE 300d AMG Line (New) |
Rs 97.85 lakh |
GLE 450 AMG Line |
Rs 1.10 crore |
GLE 450d AMG Line |
Rs 1.15 crore |
As seen in the table above, the GLE 300d AMG Line commands a premium of Rs 1.2 lakh over the previous base model. And this is what you get for the extra dough:
For starters, you now get much sportier looks with the GLE. The grille gets just a single chrome slat and a closer look reveals tiny tri-pointed star elements. Then there’s the bumper, which now gets more aggressive looking air intakes and gives the front-end a sporty look.
In profile, it now sits on larger 20-inch 10-spoke AMG-spec alloys (previously, it had 19-inchers) that gives it a better stance. And at the rear, you would need a magnifying glass to spot the change as the diffuser element in the rear bumper now gets a gloss black finish. Apart from these minor updates, the GLE AMG Line looks more or less similar to the previous base model.
There are no changes made to the dashboard layout or design of the GLE. But the infotainment system now runs Mercedes' latest version of the MBUX software, keeping it up to date. Audiophiles can also enjoy music, courtesy of the banging 13-speaker 590W Burmester sound system.
No change has been made to this department, meaning the GLE 300d continues with its 2-litre diesel engine developing 269 PS 2-litre diesel engine. Drive is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. Put your foot down and the GLE can sprint from nought to 100 kmph in 6.9 seconds before maxing out at 230 kmph.
Mercedes has also updated the car’s braking system, providing it with larger perforated discs up front for better stopping power.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE goes up against the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 on our shores.
