The Scorpio was resurrected as the Classic with a nip and tuck and Mahindra even gave it a new all-aluminium diesel engine after the launch of the new generation Scorpio N

  • RTO document reveals new mid-spec S5 variant for the Scorpio Classic.

  • New S5 trim will sit between S and S11 trims.

  • Likely to be available in both seven- and nine-seater configurations.

  • Should get a few features from the top-spec S11 trim.

  • Current trims are retailed between Rs 12.64 lakh and Rs 16.14 lakh (ex-showroom).

As it stands, there aren’t a lotta options when it comes to the variants of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic. There are actually just two trims: S and S11, with a pretty wide price gap of Rs 3.5 lakh between them. But, that is set to change, as an RTO document states that a new mid-spec variant for the Scorpio Classic is on the way, which will bridge the humongous gap between the two existing trims.

As can be seen from the document, the existing S and S11 trims will be joined by the new S5 trim, and all of these should be available in both seven- and nine-seater configurations. The nine-seater option is currently only available with the base-spec S variant.

There aren’t any deets on what the new trim will come packing, but you can expect it to build on the base trim and borrow some of the features from the top-spec S11 trim, because only then will it truly be a mid-spec trim. So, features like electrically adjustable ORVMs, manual AC, a basic audio system, central locking, and steel wheels with covers could be offered on the new variant.

The Scorpio Classic’s features list comprises a nine-inch Android-powered touchscreen unit cruise control, auto AC with rear vents, and a height-adjustable driver seat. Dual front airbags, parking sensors with reversing camera, and ABS make up the SUV's safety kit.

The new mid-spec trim will be no different in terms of what’s under the hood as it’ll continue with the 132PS/300Nm, 2.2-litre all-aluminium diesel unit paired with a six-speed manual – the only powertrain option available. Four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission are no longer part of the SUV’s drivetrain options.

Mahindra retails the two trims between Rs 12.64 lakh and Rs 16.14 lakh (ex-showroom). The new S5 trim will slot somewhere in-between the two and the SUV will continue to be a rugged alternative to the likes of the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier and Skoda Kushaq.
