The Mahindra Thar Roxx is an off-roader that serves a dual purpose. With its extra set of doors, it isn’t a compromised off-roader anymore, and thanks to the thorough changes made to the package, it is now considered as an alternative to regular family SUVs. One such matching alternative is the Tata Harrier.
We’ll save a thorough comparison for some other day, today’s story will focus on comparing their real-world performance. Both cars come with a diesel engine and here’s a quick spec check before the test:

2.0-litre diesel |

Rear-wheel drive / Four-wheel drive |
4x2 (front-wheel drive) |
With the automatic transmission, the Thar Roxx’s diesel engine puts out more power and torque than the Tata Harrier.
While the former can be had with a four-wheel drivetrain also, the Harrier is only available as a front-wheel drive SUV. So to keep things fair, only the rear-wheel drive variant of the Thar has been considered for this test.

Guess there really isn’t any replacement for displacement as the Thar Roxx gets a clean sweep in this performance comparison. The difference is marginal in all the acceleration tests, as hinted by the power outputs. The Harrier is behind by just .34 seconds in the 0-100kmph test and despite losing out in the quarter mile run, the Harrier actually clocked a higher speed.

Even in the in gear roll-on acceleration tests the Roxx was the quicker SUV. But the braking test wasn’t fair to the Harrier, as it was tested in wet weather conditions. For reference, its heavier 7-seater sibling, the Safari, stopped from 100kmph in a distance of 40.26 metres. But it is the Thar Roxx which takes the win for now.
The Tata Harrier and Mahindra Thar Roxx have different immediate rivals.
While the latter takes on off-roaders like the Force Gurkha 5-door, the Harrier fends off competition from Mahindra XUV700 5-seater, MG Hector, and Jeep Compass, as well as compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
