The Mahindra XUV 7XO, formerly known as the XUV700, has been giving the Toyota Innova Crysta a tough time ever since it was first launched in 2021. Even though they aren’t direct rivals, both offer a similar formula and sit in an almost identical price bracket. And now, the XUV 7XO comes with a sharper new design, modern interior layout, new features, and improved ride quality. It is once again headed towards the throne and is set to make this competition tougher.
The Toyota Innova Crysta has set reliability and comfort standards so high that it's the go-to choice for families who like taking frequent long road trips. But in 2026, when all other cars boast a long list of features, does the Innova Crysta still stand a chance to win against the new Mahindra XUV 7XO? Let’s find that out!
The design of the Mahindra XUV 7XO has been crafted to appeal to buyers seeking an SUV with a sporty, elegant, and futuristic aesthetic. It does follow Mahindra’s new family design language, but it clearly has an identity of its own. The front profile is enhanced by a new bumper with a faux silver skid plate, along with new ice-cube fog lights positioned at the bottom in a triangular space. To add more muscle to the front there is a new grille, C-shaped DRLs, and new bi-LED dual-pod projector headlights. The rear also houses a redesigned bumper with gloss black inserts, reworked taillights with honeycomb detailing and a black casing. You also get flush door handles and sit on new 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Toyota Innova Crysta looks like a traditional MPV with a typical silhouette, elegant looks, and a strong, dominant stance. The front profile of the car gets a huge piano black grille with chrome surrounds and a chunky bumper with sharp cuts and the ‘Crysta’ emblem embossed in it. Adding to this are dual-barrel projector LED headlights and foglights. The rear has a very flat design for the tailgate with conventional taillights and a simple bumper design. The Crysta sits on 17-inch alloy wheels and has large window panels.

Here is a detailed comparison of their size:

The XUV 7XO is clearly the wider of the two, while the Innova Crysta is remarkably longer and has more height. The wheelbase of both cars is the same. Both cars also come with a third row of seats and can be had either with captain or bench seats for the middle row.
The cabin of the Mahindra XUV 7XO is finished in a triple-tone black / tan / beige colour theme with the use of premium materials and high-quality fit and finish. What also makes the interior feel very upmarket and modern is a new triple screen layout comprising three 12.3-inch display screens for the digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, and the passenger entertainment display. It also comes equipped with a 16-speaker Harmon Kardon Sound System with Dolby Atmos, a BYOD Entertainment Screen Slot, and built-in ChatGPT in the infotainment system.

Other key features of the XUV 7XO include a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, ventilated front and rear seats, an electrically powered ‘co-driver seat with Boss Mode’, multi-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, touch-based display panel for AC controls, drive and traction/terrain modes, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, and rear window sunshades.

The interior of the Toyota Innova Crysta clearly isn’t as modern as the XUV 7XO and is now starting to show its age. The cabin is finished in a black colour theme with faux wooden inserts, while the seats can be had in Perforated Black or Caramel Tan colour options. There is no ‘wow’ factor in the interior design, but one thing is for sure, everything is built to last. We also love the fact that important functions such as the infotainment and air-con have dedicated physical controls.

The feature list comprises an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital TFT MID for the driver, an electrically adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, cruise control, a reverse camera with sensors, and two drive modes.

Speaking of safety tech on offer, the XUV 7XO leads over here as well with a Level-2 ADAS with Sense+ with the sensor field distance of 250m, radar with 3d object visualisation, a 540-degree camera with front and rear sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

What’s common between both cars is that they both offer up to 7 airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, ABS with EBD, brake assist, electronic stability control, hill-hold assist, and traction control.

XUV 7XO wins!
Mahindra offers the XUV 7XO with two engine options: a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both engines are available in manual and automatic transmission options. The diesel engine can also be had with an optional all-wheel-drive drivetrain in the higher variants. The XUV 7XO sports a new DaVinci suspension setup, which quintessentially refers to Frequency Dependent Dampers. This ensures a smooth ride quality by keeping shocks from entering the cabin to a minimum.
Here are the detailed engine specifications:

The Toyota Innova Crysta, however, is available with only a single engine option, which is a 2.4-litre diesel mill and can be had with a manual transmission only. Power is sent to the rear wheels, and there is no alternate drivetrain option available.
Here are the detailed engine specifications:

The Mahindra XUV 7XO clearly has better engine and transmission options, along with DAVINCI suspension setup and all-wheel-drive drivetrain that is offered on the higher variants of the diesel automatic version, which helps it to cater to a larger audience. The Innova Crysta’s diesel engine is known for its reliability and efficiency, but it misses out on a petrol engine and has no automatic transmission either. If you want an automatic Innova, you have no other choice but to consider the Innova Hycross.
XUV 7XO wins!
Mahindra has launched the new XUV 7XO at an introductory price for now, which is valid only for the first 40,000 bookings. The base petrol manual variant costs Rs. 13.66 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-of-the-line diesel automatic variant, along with an AWD drivetrain, costs Rs. 24.92 lakh (ex-showroom), and is the most expensive trim you can purchase.

The pricing of the Toyota Innova Crysta is a little steep, starting at Rs. 18.85 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base diesel manual variant, while the top-end variant with a 7-seat configuration costs Rs. 25.53 lakh (ex-showroom).
|
Model |
Price (ex-showroom) |
|
Mahindra XUV 7XO |
Rs 13.66 - 24.92 lakh |
|
Toyota Innova Crysta |
Rs 18.85 - 25.53 lakh |
Since the XUV 7XO’s prices are introductory, they are most likely to increase. But currently, it's still cheaper than the Innova Crysta. After a price hike, the cost of top-end variants can come close to what the Innova Crysta costs. But despite that, we feel the Mahindra XUV 7XO is still the pick of the lot considering it is the more value for money offering of the two.

XUV 7XO is more VFM
The Toyota Innova Crysta has been a go-to MPV for families that prefer reliability, space, and comfort over a long list of modern features. The Innova Crysta is also the most preferred car for interstate journeys because of these factors. But the Mahindra XUV 7XO is a very strong alternative. It clearly excels in terms of a comfortable ride, an upmarket and premium interior, a long list of features, and multiple powertrain options. This ultimately makes the Mahindra XUV 7XO a much better offering than the Toyota Innova Crysta in our opinion.
The XUV 7XO tries to attract multiple types of buyers, giving each one of them exactly what they need, while the Innova Crysta continues to cater to a small and loyal audience.
