It’ll continue to exist with the 120PS 2.2-litre diesel engine alongside the new Scorpio N

You’ve already seen the next-generation Mahindra Scorpio N in a series of teasers and spy shots. The new “big daddy of SUVs” will go on sale on June 27, but it won’t immediately replace the older Scorpio. The ever-familiar previous-gen model will continue as the Scorpio Classic, and we have spied the SUV testing ahead of its launch.

What’s different about the new Mahindra Scorpio Classic?

Going by the semi-camouflaged test mule, we don’t expect major changes compared with the previous-gen Scorpio SUV. It still has the upright stance, body coloured outer rearview mirrors and door handles, and red taillight lenses. The spied test mule was the top-spec S11 trim level equipped with alloy wheels and LED DRLs.

The Scorpio Classic could get a slightly revised front fascia. Other than that, it seems to retain the projector headlight setup, 7-slat grille and bonnet scoop as before.

The previous-gen Mahindra Scorpio was offered with a 2.2-litre diesel engine in 120PS and 140PS states of tune. We reckon the Scorpio Classic will be offered with the lower 120PS/280Nm powertrain, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. For those looking for more power, the new Scorpio N will come with 130PS and 160PS diesel engines and a 170PS 2-litre petrol engine. It’ll be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, and automatic options will be available with the petrol and diesel engines.

The Mahindra Scorpio has been around for two decades. Although the SUV has kept up with the times with powertrain and equipment updates, there were several ergonomic and platform-related issues that had been holding it back. Nevertheless, it’s still a popular choice for many – despite tough competition from newer, better equipped SUVs, the Scorpio’s sales are still going strong. For everyone else, the 2022 Scorpio N is a more modern, feature-packed SUV with all the creature comforts and safety features we have grown accustomed to in the segment.
