Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash tested the Tata Harrier and the Tata Safari last year under their #SaferCarsForIndia campaign where both SUVs received perfect 5-star ratings, and their scores are till date the highest for any car in India. Since then, Tata has sent these SUVs for further tests, and GNCAP has presented both these SUVs with their “Safer Choice” award.
This award was started back in 2018, but since the testing norms have been updated, the criteria for receiving this award has also been changed. Apart from getting 5-stars in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), and Child Occupant Protection (COP) tests, a car also needs to have speed assistance, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and blind spot detection (BSD), all of which have to meet the global performance requirements.
After getting these awards, Mohan Savarkar, Vice President and Chief Product Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited said, “We are proud to have received the Global NCAP Safer Choice Award for our flagship SUVs, the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. We have continued to be the pioneers in driving the safety conversation – ensuring that our commitment reflects in every vehicle we manufacture, regardless of price point. With this mission at the forefront, not only is our entire portfolio the highest star rated in their respective segment, but we have gone a step further by having the only SUV line-up in India which is completely 5-star rated, setting a benchmark for the passenger vehicles industry to follow. With this approach, we have ensured that safety now ranks as the top priority for the Indian car buyer.
‘’This recognition today, underscores our unwavering commitment to safety and innovation, ensuring that our customers experience not only comfort and performance, but also the highest standards of safety. We are thankful to the entire Global NCAP team for supporting us in full strength as we continue to make safer cars for India.’’
The last car to get this award was the Mahindra XUV700, when it secured a 5-star crash test safety rating from Global NCAP in 2022, but as mentioned earlier, the testing protocols have been changed since then, and the only cars in India to have this award as per the new protocols are the Harrier & Safari.
Both the Harrier and the Safari get 6 airbags as standard, and the standard safety kit also includes features like ABS with EBD, electronic stability program (ESP), traction control, hill hold control, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
