We expect the long-wheelbase Thar to debut sometime in 2023

  • 5-door Thar will be a 5-seater, could get third-row seating.

  • Underpinned by a ladder frame platform derived from Scorpio N.

  • Powered by 2-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines.

  • Prices likely to start at around Rs 15 lakh.

The upcoming Mahindra Thar five-door SUV has been spied for the first time, revealing a significantly longer wheelbase than the existing three-door Thar. It’s expected to debut sometime in 2023, rivalling the forthcoming Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny 5-door SUVs in India.

What’s new in the Mahindra Thar 5-door?

Heavy camouflage notwithstanding, the five-door Thar reveals several cues about the upcoming off-roader. It’ll be underpinned by the Scorpio N platform that’s stiffer than the existing three-door Thar’s platform. It remains to be seen if Mahindra will offer a pentalink rear suspension (like the Scorpio N with Watt’s linkage) for improved ride and handling in the five-door Thar.

In the spy shots, we can see a third row of headrests above the rear wheel, indicating that the upcoming five-door Thar will be a three-row SUV.

It should be a more premium offering than the existing Thar, equipped with features such as a larger 8-inch touchscreen, new sound system, a wireless phone charger and other equipment from the Scorpio N.

The five-door Thar will likely get the same engine options as the three-door SUV – a 2-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel unit – paired with a standard 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic transmissions. While the existing Thar’s petrol and diesel engines are tuned for 150PS and 130PS, respectively, the longer Thar could be tuned to be more powerful.

A 4x4 system with mechanically locking rear differential and brake locking front wheels will continue unchanged on the longer Thar. However, it might not be offered as a standard feature.

The long-wheelbase Thar will command a premium over its three-door sibling and should be priced from around Rs 15 lakh onwards (ex-showroom).
