BMW India has launched the M440i Convertible in India at a price of Rs 1.09 Crore (ex-showroom). Underpinned by the same tried-and-tested powertrain as the M340i sedan, it packages its sporty nature in a more exotic bodystyle, offering customers a more exclusive alternative. Here is all you need to know about this model:
The new M440i Convertible is available in a single xDrive variant, which is priced at Rs 1.09 Crore (ex-showroom) before options. It is imported as a CBU for India (Completely Built-up Unit).

The new M440i gets an overall sportier theme compared to the 3 series sedan we have seen till now. Up front, it looks a lot like the M3 and M4 with the massive gloss black ‘kidney grille’ taking centre stage. You also have swept-back LED headlamps with a unique signature for the DRLs and a sporty bumper with large black surrounds and vertical air flaps for better aerodynamics.

In profile, its two-door convertible bodystyle makes the M440i look exotic. The roof is finished in black fabric, and BMW claims that it can be opened or closed within 18 seconds while driving at up to 50 kmph. Besides this, it also gets 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels with red brake calipers and a staggered tyre setup.

The rear-end styling is more conventional with a clean look to it. Here the M440i gets LED taillamps with a 3D detailing, sporty vertical air vents on the bumpers and a gloss black diffuser as well.

You get a wide range of 7 colour options to choose from: Fire Red, Brooklyn Grey, Mineral White, Cape York Green, Portimao Blue, Black Sapphire and Arctic Race Blue.
Inside, the M440i gets a 4 seater layout and continues with the familiar dashboard design that we have seen in the 3 series till now. It gets a sleek design, with a twin curved-screen setup for the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system.

You also have a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ‘M-themed’ seatbelts and a gloss-black centre console with a dial to control the iDrive functions. Being a convertible, BMW has given it a wind deflector as well which can be raised behind the front seats to minimise wind noise and improve aerodynamics.

The interior comes finished in Sensatec leather, and buyers can opt between three cabin themes: Cognac, Black and Tacora Red.
In terms of equipment, the M440i Convertible gets electrically adjustable front seats with memory and lumbar support, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heads-up display, wireless smartphone charger, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and Adaptive LED headlamps.

Safety is taken care of by 6 airbags, electronic stability control, dynamic traction control, ADAS, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system and all-wheel disc brakes.
Under the hood, the M440i Convertible is powered by a 3-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which is paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, an ‘xDrive’ all-wheel drive system and a mild-hybrid setup. Here are its detailed specifications:

Notably, the M440i Convertible also gets an adaptive suspension and 50:50 weight distribution as well to enhance the driving experience and high-speed capabilities.
The M440i Convertible has only one direct rival in the form of the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet. It can also be considered as a larger and more practical alternative to its own sibling, the Z4.
The M440i has finally landed on our shores a long time after its global launch. However, it remains very much relevant with its impressive performance figures and value-for-money pricing, if you can even call it that. That being said, the convertible segment remains a niche in India given the body styles overall impracticality for our conditions, but it is certainly encouraging to see continued interest by select brands in this space.
