  • Ford sold the pre-facelift sixth-gen Mustang in India for a brief period.

  • The seventh-generation Ford Mustang will retain its V8 and manual gearbox.

  • Ford might launch the new Mustang in India along with the Mach-E SUV.

  • Expect major changes to the exterior and interior design.

Think muscle car and images of a Ford Mustang are likely to rush into your mind. The Stang is not just a car but an icon which has had a cult following across the globe ever since its inception in the 1960s.

We have witnessed six generations of the Mustang in the past 57 years and Ford is all set to take the covers off the latest seventh-generation Mustang on September 14 at an event called ‘The Stampede’ at Hart Plaza in Detroit.

Ford India pulled the plug on the pre-facelift sixth-generation Mustang not so long ago. Although Ford has stopped production of passenger cars in India, the brand has hinted at bringing down some of its premium models and EVs such as the Mustang Mache-E through the CBU route.

In that context, we were waiting to see the launch of the facelifted sixth-generation Mustang in India, which, unfortunately, did not happen. As things stand now, the new Mustang might be the one that Ford will bring to India along with the Mustang Mach-E SUV.

The exact technical details are still in the dark. But there’s good news - the new Stang will retain a V8 powertrain and a manual gearbox. So expect the cracker of a 5.0-litre Coyote V8 to be kept along with other powertrain options such as the 2.3-litre Ecoboost.

Ford has no immediate plans to electrify the Mustang, but we do expect some form of hybridisation with the seventh-generation Mustang which will come with revised styling inside and out and upmarket interior as revealed by leaked pictures.

The previous generation Mustang was sold in India with a sticker price of around Rs 75 lakh (ex-showroom). It is safe to expect a premium for the seventh-generation Mustang, provided it finds its way into India.
