The Thar is going electric and we can’t be excited enough. Here’s a quick lowdown on what to expect in four points

Mahindra dropped a surprise on its social media handles by giving us a first sneak peek of the all-electric Thar. Dubbed the Thar.e, the electric concept off-roader will break cover in Mahindra’s upcoming event in South Africa on August 15. Now, the teaser doesn’t offer much, but here’s a quick four-point guide on what to expect from the upcoming Thar.e.

Design Touches We Can Discern

The concept was finished in a bright shade of yellow with plenty of modern design touches, as expected from a concept. It gets bold ‘RE.BORN ELECTRIC’ decals on the hood and below it seems to be a closed-off version of the slatted grille; as this being an EV, doesn’t need a grille. Its vertically stacked LED tail lamps are also a modern interpretation of what’s offered in the current ICE model.

Expected In Two Body Styles

Yes, the five-door Thar is still under development. But it’s likely Mahindra could showcase a glimpse of it through this concept, alongside the three-door iteration. And like the current model, we suspect it to come with multiple roof options such as hard-top and convertible soft-top.

Dual-motor AWD And Off-roading Capabilities

We all know how incredible the Thar is when it comes to off-roading. And we expect the same with the Thar.e, considering it should get all-wheel-drive capabilities. Mahindra could also induce wizardry such as a low crawl ratio to make it more potent while clambering over rough terrain. And if you’re someone who uses the Thar in the city, we suspect a single-motor version to be available as well.

Is It Going Into Production?

That’s something we can answer once the wraps come off on August 15. So stay tuned. But considering that an all-electric Jimny is being planned in Europe, we hope Mahindra green-lights the Thar.e for production, giving even eco-enthusiasts something to be excited for.
