The all-electric concept was unveiled during this year's Indian Independence Day celebrations in Cape Town, South Africa

Mahindra has patented the Thar.e electric SUV concept design in India, ahead of its expected launch in 2026. The all-electric concept  debuted at this year’s Indian Independence Day event in Cape Town, South Africa on August 15. And it was the first time any 5-door iteration of the popular nameplate was showcased, but do note that the ICE Thar 5-door is based on the current model and not the Thar EV. So let’s see what these patented images have to offer.

Thar.e: What We Can Discern?

The trademarked images depict the identical 5-door Thar.e showcased at Mahindra’s South Africa event. It maintains the same square-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs), three LED bars, and 'Thar.e' branding on the grille. The patented image also reveals the unchanged chunky alloy wheels filling the substantial wheel arches and the sturdy front bumper.

Additionally, Mahindra has obtained a patent for the electric Thar's dashboard, featuring a large, square-shaped touchscreen system and a digital instrument cluster. Although not visible in this particular image, it is anticipated that the Thar EV will also include a 2-spoke octagonal steering wheel, similar to the concept version.

The Thar EV's front and rear bench seats, displaying a square pattern, have also been protected by copyright. These seats mirror the ones seen on the concept version of the electric off-roader. The front seat features an integrated headrest, while the rear passengers are provided with roof-mounted headrests, as demonstrated in the concept.

Though these are patented images, going by Mahindra’s past track record, one can expect most of the concept’s design touches to be retained in the production model.

Thar.e: Powertrains

Specifics regarding the Thar.e’s electric powertrain are currently limited, but it is anticipated to feature a large battery pack, expected to offer a claimed range exceeding 400km. The electric powertrain is expected to employ a dual motor setup, and it may come equipped with 4-wheel-drive as standard , complemented by terrain-specific drive modes.

Thar.e: More Details And Price

Once launched, the Mahindra Thar.e will lock horns with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny EV, which has been locked for production down the road. For more details about the Mahindra Thar.e, check out our in-depth unveiling story.
