Will be a dedicated EV with no ICE counterpart.
Will have an RV body style hinting at a three-row mass market offering.
Skateboard platform should allow for more cabin space and seating options than a similar ICE model.
Prices are likely to start from Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
Kia’s currently making headlines with the EV6, a crossover that kickstarts the carmaker’s EV journey in India. But during the launch event, Kia dropped another ‘shocking’ bombshell that they will be introducing an India-centric electric vehicle. But you’ll have to wait until 2025 for it to show up.
Going deeper into the new EV, Kia has revealed that it’ll have an RV (recreational vehicle) body style. Now going by previous communications, the Kia Carens is also called an RV by the carmaker. So this EV might be a three-row offering as well.
Another snippet about Kia’s new EV comes from Hardeep Brar, VP and Head of Marketing at Kia India. He revealed that Kia’s new RV will be an all-new dedicated EV and run on a skateboard platform. Crucially a skateboard platform allows for flexible body styles as well as allows a car's batteries to be mounted in the floor. This lowers the centre of gravity and should aid in more cabin space. So if we’re getting a Carens-like EV, this platform will allow for a spacious cabin and plenty of seating options.
Technical details are still scarce about Kia’s new EV, but it should offer up to 500km in a base single-motor powertrain setup. Of course, there’s no ruling out more potent AWD options, but that extra grunt will come at a cost of some range.
Kia’s upcoming electric vehicle will likely place itself as a premium offering amongst its lineup being an RV, but we don’t expect it to get close to the Carnival with prices likely starting at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). As things stand it doesn’t have a rival in the country, but do stay tuned as we expect more information on the new EV to show up as we get closer to 2025.
