It’ll make its debut alongside its flagship internal combustion-engined equivalent, the next-gen 7 Series

  • The i7 is capable of a WLTP-claimed range between 580km to 610km.

  •  Teaser reveals sleek headlights and an absurdly large traditional kidney front grille inspired by the 4 Series and iX electric SUV.

  • To share drivetrains and battery packs with the iX SUV.

  • Will feature BMW’s i-Drive 8 infotainment system, as well as the massive 31-inch theatre screen for the rear passengers.

  • To rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Tesla Model S, and the upcoming Audi A8 electric equivalent.

BMW has been preparing an all-electric equivalent of the 7 Series, called the i7 for some time, and now it's finally time for the covers to come off. The Bavarian carmaker revealed that the electric flagship sedan will debut on April 20 at the upcoming 2022 Beijing Auto Show in China. BMW also released teasers revealing plenty of dope on the i7.

The biggest revelation on the i7 has been under the hood, with the electric luxury sedan capable of a WLTP-claimed range between 580km to 610km on a single charge. While detailed technical details are yet to surface, we know it’ll share the drivetrain and battery packs with the flagship iX electric SUV. For reference, the iX is offered with the xDrive40 that features a 330PS powertrain and a 76.6kWh battery, and the xDrive50 delivering 530PS, coupled with a 105kWh battery pack.

We’ve also gotten a glimpse at how the i7 will look without the camo, and it demands luxurious presence. At the front you’ve got super sleek headlights which seem to be a standard philosophy on modern BMW’s like the iX. Of course the absurdly large twin-kidney front grille is there, taking up all the front real estate. But it seems to be a mix between the 4 Series and iX which BMW has integrated well enough to actually suit the sedan. Expect its ICE counterpart, the 7 Series to also have something similar.

Considering the i7 is BMW’s flagship EV, it will undoubtedly be loaded with bells and whistles inside including a panoramic sunroof. One of the hallmark bits will be its i-Drive 8 infotainment system and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). But the real party trick is for the rear passengers in the form of a literal theatre screen!

This theatre screen is a ginormous 31-inch panorama unit (in 32:9 format) with ultra-sharp 8k resolution that drops down from the headliner. What’s more, BMW will be collaborating with Amazon for firestick services, so you can watch movies via OTT, or stream and download your favourite ZigWheels video on YouTube while on the move. Add on 5G support and a Bowers and Wilkins surround-sound system, and you’ve got a cinema experience on wheels. It looks like the i7 and next-gen 7 Series sedans will be the first BMWs to get this theatre screen.

Post its debut, the BMW i7 electric luxury sedan will have the likes of the Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the upcoming all-electric iteration of the Audi A8 for company. While nothing’s been said about it arriving in India, considering BMW is bringing more EVs to our market we should expect it soon enough.
