Tata has launched the Nexon CNG and what makes it exciting is that it is the first CNG vehicle to come with a turbo-petrol engine and a panoramic sunroof. In this article, we will be comparing it with the Maruti Grand Vitara compact SUV which is essentially from a segment above, but has similar top-spec variant pricing in CNG guise.
Let the games begin!

Tata Nexon CNG |
Maruti Grand Vitara CNG |
Price (ex-showroom) |
Rs 8.99 lakh to Rs 14.59 lakh |
Rs 13.15 lakh to Rs 14.96 lakh |
As seen above, there is a night and day difference between the entry-level variants of both the SUVs, but the difference between the top-spec variants is not much. For the Grand Vitara, you will have to pay a premium of Rs 37,000.
For this comparison, we’ll be taking the Nexon CNG in its top-spec Fearless + PS variant whereas the Grand Vitara CNG’s top model is offered with the mid-spec Zeta trim.
In terms of dimensions, the Grand Vitara is clearly the bigger car out of the two. Here is a detailed look at their dimensions:

The Grand Vitara CNG offers greater length, and height, but falls slightly short in terms of width when compared with the Nexon. Sitting on a larger wheelbase, it also has a greater cabin space.

In terms of equipment, the Nexon CNG is clearly the better equipped car. It provides comfort features and niceties in plenty, and in fact, some of these are not even available in other CNG cars such as a panoramic sunroof. The Grand Vitara CNG’s cabin covers all the essentials, but clearly doesn’t have a match to the Nexon.

Another parameter where the Nexon CNG excels. The Tata subcompact SUV might feature a smaller engine in displacement, but it is a turbocharged engine which makes more power and torque compared to that of the Grand Vitara. The Nexon also gets a gear extra with its manual gearbox. However, it is the Grand Vitara which offers the greater claimed range.
Both Grand Vitara CNG and Nexon CNG are SUVs that can be considered if you are in the market looking for a family vehicle, while saving money on fuel. Both the SUVs have their own shares of pros and cons, but are one of the best options at the price they are offered at.
The Nexon CNG’s plus point is its feature-loaded cabin which will attract you towards it, especially if you are someone who likes to be pampered with the premium niceties. CNG vehicles are not known for being powerful, but the Nexon CNG plays by its own rules and offers sufficient power and torque with its turbocharged engine. It also doesn’t come at the cost of practicality as the twin cylinder tanks means you have more than enough luggage space.
The Grand Vitara on the other hand, has the greater road presence and is a bigger car with more space. It might not have as many features as the Nexon, but still offers enough to keep you satisfied. Another point to consider is that you get greater efficiency with the Grand Vitara.
The Nexon CNG might look like the more well-rounded package, but it all depends on your needs and requirements. Which side are you on? Let us know in the comments below.
