YZF R3 BS4 Key Highlights
Features: Back for 2018, the Yamaha YZF-R3 has a sharp and edgy design that should appeal to the masses just as the older version did. The twin cat-like headlamps, full fairing, clip-on handlebars and the sporty tail section is inspired by larger sports bikes from the Yamaha stable. The semi-digital instrument cluster has been retained as well. This time around the R3 comes with the much needed ABS feature and Metzeler Sportec M5 tyres, which should offer tonnes of grip in corners over the MRF Zappers. For 2018 the Yamaha R3 gets two colours - blue and matte black.
Engine: The 312cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin motor is now BSIV compliant and produces 42PS of peak power, with 29.6Nm of torque. The motor is mated to a slick shifting 6-speed gearbox. Underpinnings include telescopic front forks and a monoshock at the rear. The front gets a 298mm disc whereas the reaer comes bolted with a 220mm disc brake. Its tips the scale at 173kg (kerb) and the fuel tank capacity available is 14-litres.
Rivals: DSK Benelli 302R: The Benelli 302R isn’t an outright performer thanks to its weight. However, if performance isn’t a priority and if you are looking for a lot of pose value, the 302R is a good option. It feels smooth, offers confidence-inspiring handling and a very dramatic exhaust note that is similar to much bigger bikes. Kawasaki Ninja 300: The Kawasaki Ninja 300 didn't garner a lot of fame in India, owing to its price tag. But with the new pricing, the future looks a lot more promising for the Ninja 300. It does come across as a very potent track tool with not so sharp ergonomics as the KTM. Making it a more approachable machine for riders to use it for their daily stints as well. Plus Ninja 300 is Rs 50,000 cheaper than the R3 with equally promising reliability. Plus it gets ABS as standard now. Kawasaki Ninja 400: The Ninja 400 is dearer by a bit more than Rs 1 lakh over the Yamaha R3. This too gets ABS like the Yamaha R3, with an added bonus of a slipper clutch. There is also a charging dock placed near the fully-digital instrument console, which will aid your long distance tours. It produces 2PS more power but gets 10Nm more torque over the Yamaha R3. So if the performance along with a comfortable riding posture is on top of your list, the Ninja 400 is a good choice. But if that extra cash is a concern, then the Yamaha R3 is no compromise.
