So the Tata Bolt is finally here and is priced pretty well too, but on paper, is it a better option to consider over the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10?

The hatchback segment is getting more intense than ever and to beat the competition all manufacturers are trying to offer as much for the buck as they possibly can. The latest entrant in this segment is the recently launched Tata Bolt and it will go against some proven cars in its segment like the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10. Let’s take a look at how they stack up against each other, atleast on paper.

Size and Space:

As far as the length is concerned, at 3,850mm the Maruti Suzuki Swift is the longest, with the Tata Bolt following closely in second. But step inside and you will feel that the Bolt is a lot more spacious than the Swift. In fact, the relatively smaller Hyundai Grand i10 also makes a lot more knee and leg room than its Japanese rival. Why you ask? Well, the Bolt has a larger wheelbase than the Swift which effectively makes more space on the inside. Similarly with the overall width, both the Swift and the Bolt are equally wide but seating three at the back can be a squeeze in the Swift.

As far as boot space is concerned the Hyundai Grand i20 has the largest boot of them all at 250 litres of storage space. The Bolt and the Swift have a decent boot capacity of 210 litres and 205 litres respectively.

Engines:

Even on the engine front the Tata Bolt stands tall. It sports a 1.2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder unit that pumps 90PS and 140Nm. The Swift and the Grand i10 too sport a 1.2-litre engine but only make 84PS and 83PS of power and 115Nm and 114Nm respectively. And then also consider that the Bolt’s peak torque comes a lot lower down the rev range. All the three cars come mated to a five-speed gearbox. But then go a little beyond the engine specifications and the rivalry starts to get a little interesting. The Bolt petrol is more than 100kg heavier than the Swift.

The diesel variants too the story is pretty similar. Here the Bolt and the Swift essentially sport the same 1.3-litre oil burner from Fiat and make the same amount of power and torque. But once again, being more than 70kg heavier than the Swift, it’s the weight that lets the Bolt down. The Hyundai Grand i10 diesel on the other hand sports a 1.1-litre 3-pot engine. And then at 71PS and 160Nm it makes lesser power and torque too. So, on paper at least, the Bolt and the Swift seem pretty fairly matched.

And if you thought you will be able to decide which car to buy simply on the basis of the engine specifications, well, think again. The pricing really makes picking one car out of the three a Sophie’s choice. Launched at a starting price of Rs 4.45 lakh, the base petrol variant of the Tata Bolt is the cheapest of the three while the Hyundai Grand i10 is the most expensive. Funnily though, the petrol top-end Grand i10 is the cheapest of the lot.

The base diesel Bolt and the Grand i10 stand at Rs 5.59 lakh which is nearly Rs 25,000 cheaper than the Swift. And once again the top-end Grand i10 is the cheapest of the lot at Rs 6.67 lakh while Swift being the most expensive.
