Riding a lightweight, modestly powered scooter on hilly terrain at breakneck speeds isn’t what most people would venture out to do. But like other extreme off-roading and dirt track motorsport competitions sponsored by Gulf Oil, the annual Gulf Monsoon Scooter Rally brings out the spirit of adventure among its participants, and spreads the thrill of two-wheeled racing to the grassroot levels.
Scheduled for July 17, 2011, the 22nd edition of the Sportscraft organised Monsoon Scooter Rally will see participation by over 35 motorsport enthusiasts, who will race aboard their retro-fitted, finely tuned scooters across the backwoods of Navi Mumbai.
This event has grown in popularity over the years, with riders from Mumbai, Pune, Nashik etc taking on this mud-splashed challenge, encompassing a 35km off-road adventure under wet and slushy monsoon conditions. Participants are certain to encounter a tough ordeal, as they race across serpentine bends and broken mountain trails.
Four-time Gulf Monsoon Challenge champion Manjit Singh Bassan and three-time winner Shamim Khan Winner are the favourites, with first-timers Ganesh Lokhande, Nilesh Thakare, Kunal Rao, Nikunj Gala and Tarak Daiya and another former champ Rustom Patel in this year’s fray.
