The final round of the 2016 MMSC FMSCI Indian National Drag Racing Championship will meet its destiny at the newly furbished MMRT track in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The final round consists of two rounds, with the first one scheduled for Saturday whereas the concluding one will take place on Sunday. The two-day event has drawn over 100 participants competing in different categories of both cars and bikes.

To accommodate a drag strip, the club has made necessary changes to the start-finish straight of the track along with a new turf to comply with the regulations. It also provides a safe racing environment for the participants, ground staff and the viewers. With MMRT hosting its debut drag racing event the facility has also become the only multi-event race track of the country that can conduct track racing, karting and dirt track competitions with equal precision.

Farhan Vohra, the one who is spearheading the meet, said “We at the MMSC have always endeavoured to provide a safe environment for racing and set a high benchmark in this respect. Keeping this in mind, we decided to provide a structure and organisation to drag racing which is fast gaining popularity, especially among the youth.”

He further added, “At this weekend’s races, we will be using state-of-the-art timing equipment which we imported from the USA and this move reflects our efforts to take the sport to the next level.”

“Further, we have not compromised on safety, especially the riding kit for two-wheeler participants. In this regard, we are indebted to TVS Racing for their magnanimous offer to supply two-wheeler racing leathers to those who need.”

The drag meet will witness ace drag runners such as Pratap Jayaram and national two-wheeler champion Jagan Kumar of TVS Racing battling it out for glory in the car and bike categories, respectively. The former is expected to repeat his past victories in his modified Reva, which is powered by a Hayabusa engine.

Similarly, in the bike category, Jagan Kumar will do his best to maintain his previous victories astride his Apache RTR. He sat at the top of the time charts in the previous round in the Indian Open class in the 165cc class.

Superbike racers will also join the scene to make the event a bit more spectacular. All eyes will be on Mysuru’s Rizwan Ahmed who left his mark on the previous round.

Along with the National Drag Racing Championship, spectators will also enjoy the various support races for both bikes and cars. The centre of attraction, though, will be the National Championship category (Indian Open and the Superbikes), wherein all the four-stroke bikes fall in.

The club, in line with its safety standards, has made it mandatory for all the motorcycle category participants to wear a full racing leather suit. And, in case any rider doesn't have them, TVS Racing will be providing these suits at the track itself.

In the cars category, racers will compete in the Unrestricted classes from the National Championship along with various support races.
