The Maxus D90-based 7-seater was showcased at Auto Expo 2020 and could be launched in October

  • It comes with BS6 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines.
  • Likely to be priced around Rs 30 lakh.
  • MG might launch the SUV in October.

MG Motor India has taken the wraps off the Gloster full-size SUV in India at Auto Expo 2020. It is a 7-seater SUV based on the Maxus D90 SUV sold in other countries (link to story). We expect it to be launched later in October 2020 with BS6 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel and petrol engines. Once it enters the market, the Gloster will go up against the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. Prices could start at Rs 27 lakh.

The Gloster is bigger than the Fortuner and Endeavour. It exceeds both SUVs in length, width and height. It follows an athletic Mazda-esque design language and hides its weight well. At the front, the Gloster retains the Maxus D90’s oversized grille but it is now lined with chrome and holds an MG badge.

Its cabin feels warm and premium owing to its stitched leather dashboard. The highlight here is the panoramic sunroof which sets it apart from the competition. It has a floating touchscreen, digital gauge cluster, and a suite of connected car technologies. In addition, this SUV has an abundance of soft-touch materials.

In India, the Gloster will be available with a BS6 2.0-litre diesel engine which makes 215PS of power and 480Nm of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The petrol engine is good for 217PS of power and 350Nm of torque. It can be paired with either the automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Gloster is the first car in its segment to come with active safety features. It gets blind-spot detection and autonomous emergency braking in addition to a full suite of airbags. In fact, the Australia-spec model received a 5-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

MG will soon add a powerful full-sizer with great looks to its portfolio. The Gloster has several segment-firsts under its belt, too. But can it give the stalwarts a run for their money? Watch this space for our first drive review.
