As part is its expansion strategy for 2016, Mercedes-Benz will be launching 12 new models this year. Of these 12, one will be its mid-sized SUV -- the GLC, that will be placed between the GLA and the GLE. As the name rightly suggests, this new SUV is based on the MRA platform same as the C-Class.

In terms of design, the GLC gets a bold face with the twin-slat grille flaunting the three-pointed star emblem. The sweptback headlights are typical Mercedes, with LED lamps featuring an Intelligent Light System. The contours on the bonnet lead into the grille making the car look aggressive. In profile it sports a nice line below the door handles right from the front till the tail lamps.

On the inside, it looks identical to its sedan sibling. It gets the same dual tone interior with a nicely balanced combination of leather and wood. The cabin is spacious and well built, and the visibility from behind the wheel is good as well. Equipment levels are similar to the C-Class.

Under the hood, the car comes with both petrol and diesel options. The petrol motor is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder that pumps out 245PS of max power and 370Nm of peak torque. The diesel on the other hand is the familiar 2.2-litre unit that churns out 170PS and 400Nm. Both these engines come mated to a 9-speed GTronic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is expected to be launched around Rs 45 lakh. At this price point, it will go against the likes of the Land Rover Discovery Sport, the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.
